Poor and disabled big losers in Trump budget; military wins
Congressional Democrats are harshly criticizing President Donald Trump’s budget for 2018, saying it contradicts numerous promises he made on the presidential campaign trail.

Like his predecessors, for instance, Trump proposes cutting the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, which aids state prisons and county jails burdened by the unauthorized immigrant population.
“At the end of the day, they may settle for something that’s huge and egregious but less than the cosmic number they are throwing around” in the budget proposal, he said.
Trump’s budget would also cut the Head Start program by $101 million in California, according to Sen.
Maryland politicians on Tuesday condemned President Donald Trump’s newly released budget proposal, which would slash research funding at agencies such as the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. But as we’ve seen time and again, too many businesses choose the bottom line over the greater good, and Americans are the ones who endure the consequences.
The budget, which is more a statement of policy than an actual guiding document because of its likelihood to get passed on Capitol Hill, does signal how Trump views government.
Without programs like WIC and SNAP, families who rely on this assistance to feed their children may no longer be able to provide them food on a regular basis.
“It’s important to remember the power of the purse rests with Congress”, Yoder said.
There’s little sign they will have a change of heart now, especially with Trump’s administration in turmoil and his poll ratings at historic lows. American officials said they’ll still receive some money through other accounts. “Every Republican senator – and every Republican thinking about running for Senate in 2018 – owns this disastrous budget”.
“Through streamlined government, we will drive an economic boom that raises incomes and expands job opportunities for all Americans”, Trump said in his budget message. The program serves about 42 million people.
“We intend to stick to those”, Pitkin said. But House conservatives also want to embark on a round of cuts to benefit programs and are open to Trump’s suggestions for cuts to mandatory programs such as federal employee pensions. In agriculture, it would limit subsidies to farmers, including for purchasing crop insurance, an idea already attacked by farm state lawmakers.
Mulvaney says he’s received lots of questions about “compassion”. It also assumes another $610 billion in additional savings from reforming the program beyond the GOP bill, and it assumes $250 billion in savings from rewriting Obamacare-a dubious figure given that the most recent version of the AHCA was scored by the Congressional Budget Office as reducing the deficit by 0 billion.
“It sends all of the right signals for the first time in almost a decade – a budget that actually is focused on the best interests of the American taxpayer rather than what’s popular in Washington”, he said. But even if Congress accepts Trump’s budget totals – and that’s far from assured – he acknowledged it “doesn’t change significantly” the budget that was projected for the coming year by former President Barack Obama.
But he drew rebukes, even from some Republican allies, for the plan’s jarring, politically unrealistic cuts to the social safety net for the poor and a broad swath of other domestic programs.
“Analytically, you do have to make hard choices”, MacGuineas said.
“Three per cent, I’m not seeing how you get there mathematically”, said Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C.
The proposed budget, officially titled “A New Foundation for American Greatness”, calls for allocating $5.7 billion to the EPA for fiscal year (FY) 2018. However, that goal depends on growth projections that most economists view as overly optimistic and a variety of accounting gimmicks, including an nearly $600 billion peace dividend from winding down overseas military operations. “That’s nowhere to be found in this budget”.
The Army and Marine Corps will maintain their planned purchases of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles made by Oshkosh Corp. and Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles from BAE Systems Plc – 2,777 and 107 respectively funded through the base and war budgets. “I think that is ill-advised personally”, Cole told reporters. “We’ll take these things into consideration and move forward”.
There will also be significant cuts to U.S. funding for global health programs, food aid, worldwide peacekeeping and cultural exchanges, if Trump gets his way.

“This cut to EPA will right-size the agency and return the focus to protecting air, land and water instead of churning out regulations”, he said.
