OECD holds out hope US may return to Paris climate pact

The governors of California, New York and Washington, all Democrats, launched the coalition Thursday after Trump said he would withdraw the United States from the Paris accord, saying its terms are not fair and predicting major job losses because of the agreement.

He said his own foundation will help coordinate the USA effort, which will be called America’s Pledge, and it will help submit “nationally determined contributions” like other nations. Energy Secretary Rick Perry had voiced support for renegotiating the terms of the agreement, which Trump pledged to do Thursday – but in the aftermath of US withdrawal, not as an alternative to it.

Closer to home, two corporate leaders resigned from one of Mr Trump’s advisory councils and several USA city mayors pledged to “stand for environmental justice”.

France’s new president is positioning himself as the anti-Trump. “It was possible to change the obligations of the United States under these Paris agreements”, Putin said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). “ACP is very concerned about the harmful health effects that climate change is having on our patients”, continued Dr. Ende.

“It (Paris accord) did not hold nations like China and India accountable”, he said. “The president made an executive agreement because that was the best that we could do”, he said.

Fortune asked the White House whether the president believes global warming is a hoax and will update this post if we receive a response. “You shouldn’t make a noise about this, but should create the conditions for joint work”, he said. He put America first. Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Disney CEO Robert Iger withdrew from the president’s advisory council in protest.

So will General Electric. “Climate change is real”. “Industry must now lead and not depend on government”, a statement I hardly expected to be applauding a few months ago.

“The Paris Agreement and taking strong action on climate change is good for future generations of explorers and is also good for our business – to stay competitive and protect our outdoor playgrounds”, Arne Arens, president of The North Face, said in a statement. You have provoked an unparalleled wave of support for Paris and determined resolve on climate action. He added that Mr Trump was giving coal mining communities “false hope”. It didn’t include all the eventual commitments to cut emissions by participating nations, or assume any continuation of those pledges beyond 2030, says Erwan Monier, coauthor of the study and principal research scientist at MIT’s department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.

Donald Trump harbours by all accounts a churlish desire to dismantle Barack Obama’s legacy
