‘Wonder Woman’ gross revised up to $103.1 million
The well-reviewed movie easily surpassed industry expectations with one of the summer’s biggest debuts, according to studio estimates last Sunday.

“Wonder Woman” earned $103.1 million in North America, setting a new record for a female-directed film. While skewing somewhat female, it drew a fairly evenly split audience.
More than half, 52%, of the film’s audience this weekend were female – a significant number for a genre that has been dominated by men.
Where does Wonder Woman now stand against the other movies in the DC Extended Universe? That’s because almost all superhero movies glorify wealth (and the freedom it provides), aristocracy and/or monarchy, militarism, unilateralism, and right-wing fantasies about criminality. “They’re about women as well”, Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein told the Associated Press. “Now I want to make Wonder Woman 2”.
The Amazons’ fight scenes are arguably some of the best moments in Wonder Woman in terms of choreography, directing, and sheer awesomeness-and it’s thrilling to know that director Patty Jenkins cast them from a pool of pro-athletes. However, that still wasn’t enough to beat Sam Taylor-Wood’s $14 million for the film Fifty Shades Of Grey in 2015. After the Alamo Drafthouse, which is based in Austin, Texas, announced it would hold all-female screenings of the film, men’s rights activists protested. Lebanon banned the film because Gadot is Israeli.
The film’s robust earnings are a big win for DC Comics, which has often struggled to match the success of Marvel properties at the box office.
Pirate of the Caribbean 5 dropped 65.7 percent in its second weekend, with the collections limited to an estimated $21.6 million.
The only other major release this weekend was Fox’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which took $23.5m (£18.2m).
Mark Ruffalo, who reprises his role as the Hulk in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, shared his joy over the film’s very successful opening weekend.
Wonder Woman had a huge opening weekend, so Warner Bros. announcing a sequel is really more of a matter of “when”, not “if”. The latest MCU movie has grossed $355.4 million domestically so far for a global gross to date of $816.6 million.
But more importantly, Jenkins and “Wonder Woman” burst through Hollywood’s glass ceiling with one of the rarest things: a summer blockbuster helmed by a woman. A report by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University found that women were protagonists in just 29 percent of the 100 top-grossing films in the US last year, and among movies that featured female protagonists, only 3 percent were action films.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at USA and Canadian theaters, according to comScore.
Here’s a joke you haven’t heard: What’s the difference between Wonder Woman and Donald Trump? The film’s United Kingdom collection stood at $7.5 million, Mexico collections at $8.4 million, South Korea’s $8.5 million, Brazil’s $8.3 million, Australia at $4.9 million, Russian Federation collected $4.8 million and Indonesia $4.7 million.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, $1.2 million. And after watching a character as self-accepting and courageous as Wonder Woman, Bella knows that she needs not be anything other than her unbelievable self.
Both “Iron Man” and “Guardians” were able to capitalize on strong word-of-mouth to cross the $300 million threshold at the domestic box office.

Doraemon: Great Adventure In The Antarctic, $3.9 million.
