Facebook unveils new mission statement, tools focused on Groups

And, of course, transforming media and politics by presenting news and opinion – true and fake – to billions of people around the world. It’s a new iteration of Facebook that takes its cues from old message boards – after trying to centralize its enormous user base around the singular News Feed and having it buckle under the weight, Facebook is now trying to re-fragment its user base, balkanizing it so that people feel more comfortable sharing.

Membership request filtering: we also hear from admins that admitting new members is one of the most time-consuming things they do.

Facebook is changing its mission, from making the world more connected to bringing the world closer together, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday in Chicago. If you are a Group admin, Facebook says you can now add new members by establishing up to three questions for them to answer.

Zuckerberg stated this Wednesday that a great deal of what the platform can do is to help make a more thoughtful and beneficial civil debate on a portion of the greater issues also. It was his first in-depth interview for television since 2012.

Zuckerberg himself has embarked on a 2017 tour of all 50 USA states, raising speculation that he’s preparing for a presidential run.

As the world becomes more connected, Zuckerberg said no single group or country can single-handedly tackle some of the world’s biggest problems alone.

Facebook executives have been contemplating the company’s mission while dealing with several controversies, from criticism over its perceived role in spreading misinformation during the US presidential election to its handling of violent live videos posted on the social network.

“That’s why it helps to have control of the company”, he said. Insiders have sold 6,751,083 shares of company stock worth $1,004,850,266 over the last three months.

The Facebook founder’s message comes at a time when the US President Donald Trump has banned the entry of immigrants from six Muslim-dominated countries including Somalia.

Zuckerberg is however optimistic about his mission to foster communities among the billions of Facebook users around the world.

Group to group linking: Group admins will now be able to recommend related groups to their community members to join. The company also is exploring various ways for group administrators to generate revenue from managing those forums.

One example Zuckerberg gave for this sort of group is a support communities for people with rare diseases. “There’s no top-down structure to enable that, so the will needs to be built bottom up”. Finally, BTIG Research raised Facebook from a “neutral” rating to a “buy” rating and lifted their price objective for the company from $139.94 to $175.00 in a research report on Tuesday, March 21st. Administrator Michael DeFilippi has the ears of local politicians – Miami’s mayor and city manager are members – and successfully pushed for new legislation to outlaw Styrofoam. “This is not about friends and family”, said Chris Cox, Facebook’s product chief.

However, Zuckerberg is not the only one who shared an iftar meal with Muslims.

But right now few of us are part of these meaningful groups, and that’s something Facebook wants to change.

Schroepfer noted that the company would invest in a number of foundational technologies over the next 10 years, including connectivity, artificial intelligence, and virtual and augmented reality.

Zuckerberg’s latest post comes as Facebook today also announced some new features created to help admins grow and manage their groups.

“Mark, you’re really trying to make the world a better place for us and I personally acknowledged that”. That you also have to work and do proactive work to help bring people closer together. There are good reasons for secrecy – namely safety and privacy – but unsafe organizations can also use the groups as bases for recruiting new members.

“Bringing the world closer together” seeks to mend the divisions that formed from these conflict sources as well as a rally for truthfulness in content. Racism, bullying and radicalization can thrive in closed groups populated by like-minded people.

“I’m visiting small towns in Iowa, and just stopped in Wilton, population 2,800”, Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.
