Flag Day, observed annually on June 14, celebrates the adoption of the USA flag. We owe it to all those who fought for our flag – which the symbol of the freedom we enjoy – to ensure our old flag is either cleaned and mended, or retired and replaced when it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country. Our American Flag is the fabric of our country, and by flying it we can be reminded that we can prevail against all adversity. Flag Day is a nationwide observance today, but Pennsylvania is the only state that recognizes it as a legal holiday.

“What you have there is no effort to properly display the flag”, said Sunnyvale resident Joe Campbell. It was only the first instance of his lifelong devotion to annual celebrations of the US flag.

The original design has been officially modified 26 times since 1777. In 1893, the Society of Colonial Dames succeeded in getting a resolution passed to have the flag displayed on all of the city’s public buildings. As you travel around Hutchinson today, take note of the condition of the flags you see.

How is it a flag that has so much to say and yet so few to care on how it looks or is displayed?

FIRST FLAG? – The Grand Union Flag, a.k.a. the Continental Colors, was hoisted on the ship Alfred in Philadelphia on December 2, 1775 by Lt. John Paul Jones. The next was the white to indicate peace and liberty, showing we are a non-aggressive nation and that our people have the right to do what ever they wish. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

Know that the field of blue with the white stars should be displayed at the top left of the flag.

The next step was to designate national Flag Day, which was done by Congress Aug. 3, 1949, and requested on June 9, 1966 that the president issue an appropriate proclamation on that day annually. “Let’s embrace our Native culture and every other pole can be a Nation flag”.

– The flag should not be dipped to any person or thing.

“We usually (burn) around 1,500 flags a year”, said member Mike Manley.

Then honor guards at the American Legion and VFW will stand at attention and the flag will go up in smoke.
