Here’s How to Watch the Solar Eclipse on TV

This Monday will mark the first time in nearly 40 years that a full solar eclipse has been visible in the mainland United States. The last time a total solar eclipse was visible to such a large portion of the USA was 100 years ago. We can see them here on Earth only because of the distances that separate Earth, the moon and the sun.

Millions are expected to watch the once-in-a-lifetime total eclipse set for Monday, August 21st.

Hassle says about 65 percent of the sun will be blocked by the passing moon in the region. For the USA, the next total solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024. It’s so bright, that regular sunglasses won’t do you any good if you’re staring right at it.

Since a camera lens focuses the sun’s rays onto a small area like a magnifying glass, pointing a digital camera directly at the sun will damage its image sensor. Google “shoebox solar eclipse viewer” and you’ll find YouTube videos and detailed instructions for making a pinhole projector.

Most importantly, do not stare at the eclipse directly!

Other states as well as Canada and many countries in Central and South America will experience a significant partial eclipse.

On the positive side, the National Weather Service says the signs are looking very good for clear skies when the eclipse passes over OR and Idaho as well as when it passes over the OH and Tennessee valleys. Put your eclipse glasses on over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.

A person should not look at the eclipse through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device. There will also be moon pies and an Eclipse Burger, a double patty made with turkey and beef patties.
