Everything you need to know about the total solar eclipse

In an arc from OR to SC, 10 states will be in the path of totality, experiencing total darkness. PJM Interconnection, the nation’s largest grid operator which manages the power supply in 13 Eastern states and Washington, D.C., anticipates replacing up to 2,500 megawatts of solar capacity.

Long answer? It depends on where you are. The total duration of the event is 2 hours and 51 minutes. The disc of the moon doesn’t quite cover the entire surface of the sun, leaving a bright ring, or “annulus”, around a blacked-out center. How else can I watch it?

It is due to cross the U.S. from west to east, passing through parts of the following 14 states: Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and SC.

Monday’s solar eclipse is expected to be a unique event, but it’s not worth burning your retinas over. It’s an absolutely stunning experience.

Some places closer to the eclipse path of totality will have over 90 percent of the sun covered by the moon, while other places in the Northeast and Midwest will have less than 85 percent of the sun’s face covered. Far from a biblical omen of doomsday (Amos 8:9, among others), this simple yet awe-inspiring alignment of earth, moon and sun has produced several discoveries that have helped reshape our scientific knowledge. I was born two years too late for that one.

People in other areas of the US, Canada, Mexico, parts of South America and north-western Europe will be able to see a partial eclipse. Outside of this path, observers will see a partial eclipse.

“You can be left with a scar from where you were staring at the Sun and that can be right in the center of your vision”. The moon passes between the Earth and sun every 29 days, a time we call the “new moon” – when the moon is not visible in Earth’s nighttime sky. If you are traveling out of town for the eclipse and have a hotel booked, make sure you double-check your reservations before heading out. There’s a lot of great information on how to do this on the internet. Telepun has booked six separate sites – five camping areas and one hotel – along a 400-mile-long swath from Missouri to Tennessee, ready to get ahead of the weather. It shows you how to photograph a solar eclipse. It’s the number scientists around the world have collectively deemed strong enough for that lens to keep you safe during an eclipse.

Clouds and storms will be most likely along the coast (looking at you, Charleston) and in the elevation of the Appalachian Mountains.

You should never look directly at the sun, so to view the solar eclipse directly without damage to your eyes, you need special solar filter glasses.

Q: Can you use binoculars with eclipse glasses?

I might or might not be joining you.

Will I even be able to see it? River Valley Eye Professionals is urging everyone to view the eclipse with proper eye protection to avoid any temporary or permanent eye damage from the sun. Blindness can set in nearly immediately! As totality approaches, you will see the astonishing sight of day turning to night and the Sun’s corona blazing in the sky.

When using your personal box theater, turn away from the sun – and let the sun’s rays shine through the tiny pin hole. You just have to see it. “You wouldn’t necessarily feel uncomfortable”.

The almost four-hour program will include unprecedented images of the eclipse from numerous spacecraft – including the International Space Station – high-altitude aircraft and balloons, and ground observations. It will blow your mind.
