IU Notebook: Ball said defense takes nothing away from Ohio State performance

The concern for Ohio State on defense entering 2017 is the young secondary.

Ohio State and IN kick off at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Ohio State’s offense had moments when it resembled an efficient machine operating at full capacity, like when junior Parris Campbell hauled in a short pass from Barrett, cut upfield, got a good block near the sideline and galloped 74 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. “But we’ve practiced as such”.

While we await those highly anticipated games, take a look at some of #2 Ohio State’s highlights from last night’s win over Indiana. A lot of questions were answered in the 49-21 road victory.

The Buckeyes recovered an IN fumble deep IN Hoosiers territory and scored on the next play from Barrett to Benjimen Victor.

That’s a pretty good start for the guy who missed all but one play last season at LaGrange High school and started in place of Mike Weber, the Buckeyes’ top runner in 2016, who sat out with a hamstring injury. The others came in 2010 (Marshall) and 1997 (Wyoming). “We never look forward to the next game”. Neither was ready to get into the game, though the Chiefs hope both are ready for the regular season. Head Coach Urban Meyer and his squad are eager to hit the gridiron again and purge that regrettable bowl game from their collective memories. “Everything else was outstanding”, Meyer said.

“Last year was very alarming because our whole team was new”, he said.

Wilson and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day integrated a more creative passing game with more creative crossing routes and clear-outs, and once Barrett found his rhythm, the big plays followed.

“We’ve done more unscripted plays than we ever have”, Meyer said, referring to practice. IN hasn’t beaten the Buckeyes since 1988. One of them is wide out Terry McLaurin.

Still, I think the Hoosiers are going to struggle with the big boys in the Big Ten’s East division.

Plenty of time for Corso to mug for pictures in front of the Memorial Stadium scoreboard, which he did with many of his former players, who lifted him up and carried him from the field.

“Is it as many people as I’m used to in the stadium?” The team needed to get off on the right foot. “It’s going to be exciting being in that atmosphere”.

Ohio State: Heads home September 9 for an even tougher matchup against No. 7 Oklahoma. The Buckeyes were 11-2 overall and 8-1 in the Big Ten.

OSU: Antonio Williams 1 run (Nuernberger kick), 5:17. And when it counted, the defense figured things out and slowed down an IN offense that looked like it had an edge early. After an early touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes led 42-21, ensuring offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson would romp over his former team. They were also 6-7 against the spread overall and 4-5 ATS in conference games. “He can make just about any throw on the football field”.
