DACA: Colleges try to reassure undocumented students
On Tuesday, United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that President Donald Trump was ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed young undocumented people, many of whom were brought to the U.S.as infants, to live and work in the US without fear that they would be deported.

The courts sided with the MCC system, stating that DACA granted the students temporary legal status and that they qualify for in-state benefits.
The federal policy, officially called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, allows students who were brought to the USA illegally as children to live, study and work here. DACA is a popular and successful program whose repeal is not only inhumane but would cost the state more than $1 billion as employers replace DACA recipients who’ve lost their work permits, said California State Attorney General Xavier Becerra.
“One that charts a secure pathway toward citizenship and allows these Dreamers to continue to live, work and serve the only country a lot of them know as home”. The UI does not ask about citizenship/immigration status during the application process, nor does the UI “maintain information on undocumented students or students with DACA status”, she said.
We greatly appreciate your consistent leadership on DACA and the understanding you have demonstrated concerning its impact on higher education, and by extension the potential effects on innovation and the economic vitality of our country.
Trump administration officials announced Tuesday morning they would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy begun by the Obama administration in 2012.
The president of the university, C.L. Max Nikias, also released a statement regarding DACA Tuesday.
When DACA recipients got a bombshell today, they – and other concerned college students – likely looked to authority figures for some sort of guidance.
Ms Kelleher said that she personally knows a number of Irish families in NY who benefited from Daca and they were “absolutely devastated and understandably very concerned”. “The most important thing for our administration is the safety of our students”.
He said he’s already spoke with political figures regarding DACA’s removal, including Congressman Mike Quigley, representative of Illinois’ 5th District, which includes Chicago’s North Side.
UI Student Government President Jacob Simpson and Vice President Lilián Sánchez said in a statement that the termination of DACA will revoke the documentation of nearly 800,000 people, many of them students.
“We should be dedicating our resources to securing our borders and deporting the violent criminals preying on our communities, not going after individuals who were brought to America as children through no fault of their own”, said Denham. “I just don’t know what to do”. I think me speaking out is a way of saying that I don’t consent to what’s going on.
“Maybe this will force Congress to do something, like ‘Hey, we have to do something about the Dreamers, ‘” Romero Ramirez said.
“Let me be clear: Our immigrant brothers and sisters are here to stay”.
He also wants Congress to act against the discontinuation of the administrative order.

“It defies understanding that we as a country would squander the wealth of talent, commitment and grit exhibited by this extraordinary group of people who we know as our colleagues, our classmates and our neighbors”, Rooney wrote.
