Late double helps Wales beat Moldova

Teenage super sub Ben Woodburn was the inspiration for Wales as they scored two late goals to leapfrog the Republic of Ireland into second place in Group D.

Walters said: “We threw the kitchen sink at them and couldn’t get the result”.

“It is still very exciting for us with a lot to play for; the last two games should be fantastic”.

The victory in Moldova will allow Wales to wedge between Serbia and Ireland, and at the top of his voice declare his ambitions for Mundial. It’s theirs to lose.

In fact, Moldova have only won two of their last 32 matches and they were friendlies against Andorra and more recently, San Marino.

“We weren’t going to start him in both games and play him for 90 minutes”.

“Even though he might be able to handle it he is still developing, getting bigger and stronger, so we have got to be careful how we use him”. “We have to go to Moldova and do the same, but the feeling is that we can have momentum again”. That is the aim now.

Former Crystal Palace teammate Jonny Williams added: “I wasn’t there at the last game, but it looked on the TV like it’s got worse”.

With it looking like it was going to be one of those night’s for Wales, Coleman called upon youngster Ben Woodburn to be Wales’ saviour for the second successive week and he was just that.

The 17-year old scored the victor against Austria on Saturday within four minutes of his introduction and it was his assist that allowed Hal Robson-Kanu to break the deadlock in Moldova.

Massive moment in the game and it was all about the quality of one of the hottest young talents in the British game.

Already Liverpool’s youngest scorer, Woodburn – who turns 18 next month – has joined a national set-up littered with players who were given their chance early by Wales.

“Most importantly, we got the three points and are still in with a good chance of doing something”.

“Their goal came out of the blue and set us back – but we came roaring back”, said O’Neill. “But, if you’re good, you’re good”. We showed on Tuesday night what we are capable of.

It was probably the best performance since Gordon Strachan came into the job, but it’s taken him three-and-a-half years to find a solution to producing a dominant and attacking performance.
