Trump hails hurricane relief efforts as he visits Texas

“They’re fine because I’m fine”.

The President touched down in Air Force One with First Lady Melania Trump to see the devastation wrought by the tropical storm. The president shook hands, dispensed aid and posed for pictures.

President Donald Trump, in a widely watched test of his handling of the disaster, distributed food and played with children at a centre for evacuees in his first trip to Houston since it was slammed by one of the most destructive storms to hit the United States. “It has been done very efficiently, very well”.

“It’s very healing for people”, Kathryn Tart, dean of the university’s College of Nursing, said.

“As tough as this was, it’s been a wonderful thing”, Trump added as he spoke of the nation’s unified response to the hurricane. I think it shows how most people were reasonably responsible with how they protected themselves.

Mr Trump’s first stop was a shelter, where he visited a section reserved for child survivors and listened to their stories. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), among other local officials.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says 53,630 Texas residents displaced by Harvey are now staying in government-funded hotel rooms. The region has a strong economy that will support its storm recovery, unless the Trump administration really does rescind NAFTA and global exports.

“I guarantee you there’s going to be a shortage of Sheetrock in Houston during the next three months”, said Roger Cooner, a Houston-based architect.

“Everybody wants to help, and that is great”, she said.

Mr Trump has asked legislators for a $7.9billion dollar down payment towards Harvey relief and recovery efforts – a request expected to be swiftly approved by Congress, which returns to work on Tuesday after its summer break. “We’re signing a lot of documents now to get money into your state”. “And we are going to take it day by day, week by week”. Trump also called it “good exercise” when he helped to put supplies into vehicles.

Houston is trying to dry itself out and recover from the historic floods of Hurricane Harvey.

But Reynolds also emphasized how responding to Harvey “is a long-term game, and we need to help (the victims) today and tomorrow”. We will help you rebuild.

“Our hearts are heavy with sadness for those who lost everything”, Mr Trump said at an event in North Dakota to pitch his plan for overhauling the tax code.

Imagine how we could deploy Houston’s do-it-yourself spirit to answer America’s long list of disagreements over climate change, environmental protections, race relations and economic justice. “What do we need to order?”

Organizations like the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and faith-based organizations are actively assisting on the ground and they are doing a fantastic job.

As nerves began fraying among evacuees in their second week of displacement following one of the worst storms on record in Texas, the basic act of lying face down and putting one’s aching muscles in the hands of a caring human being lifted their spirits. “We mourn and pray and struggle through the hardships – together”.

Texas residents who fled to Austin, San Antonio and Dallas ahead of the storm returned to check on their homes as flooded streets drained. But once Harvey got into the Gulf of Mexico on August 23, it rapidly exploded into a Category 4 hurricane just a few hours before coming ashore, something experts had not seen happen much before.

As efforts proceed to respond to Harvey, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is deploying assets to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in preparation for Hurricane Irma, the agency’s administrator, Brock Long, said Sunday. “Found him to be kind, reassuring”, ABC7 reporter Elex Michelson tweeted with a picture of Trump and two Harvey victims taking a selfie. It killed an estimated 50 people, displaced more than 1 million and damaged some 200,000 homes in a path of destruction stretching for more than 300 miles.
