The 20th-seeded Vandeweghe is into the round of eight at a Grand Slam tournament for the third time this season. Vandeweghe hopes to make her first career grand slam final and is 0-1 in grand slam semifinal appearances. Vandeweghe’s victories came at Wimbledon in 2015 and Dubai in 2016. The success Vandeweghe thought would instantly be hers has taken longer than she imagined, but that didn’t matter to her on Wednesday. She netted a forehand on her first opportunity to clinch the match but on the second a service victor completed her victory to a roar of approval from the crowd. Whatever I am to any person out there, doesn’t really affect me personally.
When the tournament started, much of the talk focused on Maria Sharapova, arguably the biggest name in women’s tennis aside from Serena and Venus.
