Guest editorial (Wheeling): On DACA, Trump abiding by the oath he took

Trump is navigating politically tricky waters. That included Jane Raybould, who is seeking to challenge Sen.

ANALYSIS: As he announced on Tuesday that the federal government would phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Americans have been denied jobs because of qualified DACA recipients.

Glen Dubois, the chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, noted that schools are awaiting guidance from the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia about how they can “support the individuals who seek opportunity with us”.

Trump might have actually done the DACA cause a favor. “As the senator for all Nebraskans, I will #DefendDACA”.

Oh said because she worked while undocumented, employment protection policies, such as overtime pay regulations, did not apply to her.

DACA, which came in effect in 2012 through an executive order by former President Barack Obama, awards almost 800,000 recipients the ability to live, work and go to school in the United States. She added that the issues surrounding DACA were not “about political beliefs”.

It’s up to Congress, a White House fact sheet said, “to responsibly address federal immigration law in an appropriate and constitutional manner”. “First, it creates a whole new class of people who will then be eligible for a green card and citizenship – namely, the extended family members of those who will receive legal status who can, through chain migration, get legal status themselves”.

Of 3,500 Dreamers in Missouri, roughly 3,400 of them have applied to be reinstated under DACA, he said, the vast majority of whom are working jobs throughout the state. Known as “Dreamers”, the young people were given a reprieve from deportation and access to work permits if they arrived in the USA before age 16 and stayed in school and out of trouble. The time for obfuscation is over.

Obama said he was against that sort of thing before he was for it. One can also obtain citizenship through a spouse. According to a 2017 Pew Research Center study, there were 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States in 2014 and 71%, or 8 million of those 11.3 million, participating in the USA labor force.

Bacon has pledged to work to keep DACA participants from being deported.

Two Democrats are vying to face Bacon in November 2018: Kara Eastman and former Rep. Brad Ashford. I think it ought to be done in a comprehensive fashion. Legislation to protect 800,000 #Dreamers is an economic & humanitarian imperative.

After Sessions’ announcement, House Speaker Paul Ryan said he hoped Congress can find “a permanent legislative solution that includes ensuring that those who have done nothing wrong can still contribute as a valued part of this great country”.

“Otherwise, Dreamers will always be subject to the whims of the executive branch”, Ashford said.

If non-working American citizens or legal immigrants fill the jobs void at the current wage rate, prices in these industries would remain relatively constant, and the switch from undocumented immigrants to legal taxpayers could boost USA tax revenues. “Each DACA grant is for a two-year period, so (for) anyone who has deferred action now, it’s currently valid”.

While passing DACA legislation is the obvious solution, lawmakers could scuttle any deal by attaching poison pills to the legislation.

If Congress had done what its leaders promised, rather than keeping it around as a campaign issue, there would be no “dream children”. Trump’s supporters see his ultimatum as a tough stance on a do-nothing Congress, contrasting Obama’s administration as weak, ineffective and embarrassing.
