International Olympic Committee awards Paris 2024, Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

It is the first time the IOC has awarded a Games 11 years in advance, as it traditionally gives the next Olympic host city seven years to prepare.

“It’s a big win and we are here to really enjoy it”, said Paris 2024 bid co-chief Tony Estanguet, reflecting the triumphant mood among the 60-strong French delegation.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles, also announced that he and Rep. Steve Knight, R-Palmdale, introduced a bipartisan resolution in the House of Representatives in support of bringing the Olympics back to Los Angeles in 2028.

Bach said the unanimous International Olympic Committee decision would secure the future of the Games and ensure successful Olympics. “I was there on the phone every day and I think we got a good deal”. “We have the two best possible games for the Olympics in 2024 and 2028, in two great Olympic countries”.

The Brazilian, who succeeded Sir Philip Craven after he earned a first-round victory in the election at the IPC General Assembly in Abu Dhabi Friday (September 8), added that he was “greatly excited at what Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 can do in terms of growing the Paralympic Movement”.

Each city will be hosting their third Olympic Games, Paris on the 100th anniversary of its last Olympics.

“With this team, I am very proud and moved to bring the Games back to Paris”.

Paris’ bid made use of the city’s most famous icon – the Eiffel Tower – which will be in the backdrop for the triathlon, marathon and open-water swimming. As much as $160 million of that money could be pumped into youth sports throughout Los Angeles, helping to lay the foundations of an Olympic legacy more than decade before the games take place. The Games were initially contested between five potential host cities before Germany’s Hamburg withdrew its bid in November 2015, followed by the Italian capital of Rome in October 2016 and Hungary’s Budapest in February 2017.

Bach first signalled that the double award of the Games could be on the agenda in December a year ago, lamenting that the bidding process produced “too many losers”.

The two cities had been waiting for a vote that officially ratified the pre-determined conclusion. They will climax tomorrow with a concert outside the town hall as soon as Anne Hidalgo, the city’s mayor, returns from Lima, where the International Olympic Committee was meeting.

Some have even wondered whether Los Angeles could have extracted a more generous package from the IOC. But one by one, cities dropped out, leaving only Paris and L.A.

But Paris will still have to spend around $3 billion on building and renovating sites, with half of the amount going on the Olympic village alone.

“And when there are a lot of competing cities, the victor is trapped.”In an attempt to impress the International Olympic Committee in the bidding process, candidate cities have a habit of underestimating certain costs – as London did for the 2012 security bill – and overestimating potential economic benefits”. Announcements in French and English in the Metro spread the news.

USA track and field star Allyson Felix said she believed the 2028 Olympics would help inspire a new generation of athletes. “That’s an excellent outcome”.
