Equifax data breach could lead to fake tax returns

In a few states, including Pennsylvania, credit freezes expire after seven years.

In a short statement Wednesday, Equifax said all posts containing the wrong link had been deleted. The site can also notify you of other cyber threats. Obviously if the check clears, it was received.

And unless you’re a Greater Cincinnati resident who lives in IN, credit freezes aren’t free. Canadians may wish to set up a fraud alert on their credit reports, which is a flag to anyone requesting your credit file that you suspect you may be a fraud victim.

Freezes are regulated; locks are not.

– Identitytheft.gov gives a step-by step-guide on everything you need to do to protect yourself. This is especially important if you know your information has been compromised. In a tweet to a potential victim, the credit bureau linked to securityequifax2017.com, instead of equifaxsecurity2017.com.

Also watch for odd mailings, rejection letters, etc.

Equifax’s entire response to the breach has been a mess.

The breach involved TALX, which is Equifax’s human resources and payroll service.

But Equifax knowingly waited six weeks to inform 44% of the American population that their credit records were compromised by an unknown adversary, Mr. Scott noted. Why would I want to provide all of that information again when they have already shown they can not protect it?

“Most likely a lot of folks will be avoiding Equifax and going to their competitors, but I don’t know that TransUnion and Experian will be much better”, Werner said. “Consumers should be aware of fake websites purporting to be operated by Equifax”.

Here is one way to ensure no one accesses your credit information except you.

This could result in identity theft on a massive scale. Check your credit report every four months or so.

The hack, which occurred between May and July of 2017 but was not publicly reported by Equifax until September 7, involved the theft of names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers.

Also, keep receipts in case you need to prove which charges you authorized and which you did not.
