Despite early struggles, Jets topple Falcons

Ryan Fitzpatrick had a pretty vanilla debut, getting just one series and dropping back to pass three times.

Offense continues to shine: Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan engineered two quick-strike touchdown drives against the Jets.

No need to make any sweeping observations about a Jets preseason game featuring a first-year coach, a backup quarterback filling in for a punched-out starter and a defense still without its best lineman and using a vanilla game plan. Marshall was limited to just 13 games last season after suffering two broken ribs and a collapsed lung in Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys. KFVE 9 in Honolulu, Hawaii, will also show the game with Ian and Greg. The Jets, on the other hand, enter this season projected to be one of the NFL’s elite defensive teams, but lack a dependable option at quarterback.

On the play, outside linebacker Quinton Coples was attempting to cover Mooney in man, and failed miserably. He and the Falcons also benefited from a penalty on third-and-7 from the 8, keeping the drive alive. Ward scored on the next play.

After the ensuing Jets three and out, former Bears burner Devin Hester almost returned Ryan Quigley’s punt for a quick six points, but an outstanding effort by Bilal Powell stopped him at the four-yard line.

Meantime on receiving, Mooney is leading Atlanta tonight with sixty yards on catch, no touchdown. Ryan retired for he night after that play. Offensively the Falcons put up 5.3 yards per play and turned it over only once.

The Atlanta Falcons had a very encouraging performance from their starters in their 31-24 win over the Tennessee Titans in their first preseason game.

Outside of Chris Ivory scampering for a 33-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter, Friday, by any definition, was a poor showing by the offense. Fullback Tommy Bohanon and left guard James Carpenter were among those who provided solid blocks on the play. The way we went after the ball, the tackling as well.

“I thought it woke the guys up a little bit”, Bowles said.

BRIEFS: SS Calvin Pryor didn’t play after missing practice during the week for personal reasons. He’ll be seeing plenty of time in place of Sheldon Richardson, who will serve at least a four-game suspension (potentially longer because of his arrest in connection with a drag-racing incident in St. Louis last month).

The Jets are looking to rebound from a poor week one showing in Detroit, where they gave up 428 total yards to the 123 New York’s offense scrapped across.
