Bengals, Marvin Lewis delay decision on coach’s future

Marvin Lewis, the head coach of the Bengals reported by most to be coaching his last game, cracked a seemingly-rare smile.

Sometimes in the National Football League, it can be a very poor decision for teams to change coaches coming off a bad season.

Harbaugh could also try to hire Chuck Pagano, the Ravens former defensive coordinator who was sacked as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Hoard, the play-by-play voice of the Cincinnati Bengals since 2011, stood inside the radio booth at M&T Bank Stadium with his broadcast partner, Dave Lapham, as the Bengals, trailing Baltimore, 27-24, in the closing minutes, took possession.

The Cincinnati Bengals surprisingly chose to bring back head coach Marvin Lewis on a two-year extension that runs through the 2019 season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.

NEWS: #Bengals sign Head Coach Marvin Lewis to a two-year contract, running through the 2019 season. The relationship between Lewis and Brown is a complicated one, even if there’s little denying the strength of their bond, even through rough times.

Lewis, whose contract is expiring, said he and Bengals owner Mike Brown will have a talk on Monday morning and go from there. Allen disputed any notion that the drops made a significant impact in the final score of Sunday’s contest.

It is easy to find fault with what Lewis has done in Cincinnati. For the first time in 17 years – since the 1999 season – the Buffalo Bills franchise is going to the playoffs. Kicker Justin Tucker will be enough to save the team if the Bengals post a stiff challenge in head coach Marvin Lewis’ last hurrah. They hadn’t reached the playoffs in a dozen seasons when he was hired.

This is a step backward for the Bengals, who have yet to win a postseason game under Lewis. Baltimore’s defense has been excellent again this season and while the offense is anemic, especially through the air, they have the talent to pull off a win or two in the playoffs and as we have seen in years prior there is a winning pedigree under John Harbaugh.

The Bengals, who finished third in the AFC-North with a 7-9 record, did not make the playoffs.

“I’m still texting Vinny right now, said Brown”.

“See, I nearly said something stupid there”, Lewis continued.

“Obviously, you want to get off to a faster start, but I think we did a great job of fighting and putting ourselves in position to win the football game”, Wallace said.

Might Lewis’ defensive coordinator, Paul Guenther, or special-teams coordinator Darrin Simmons be a candidate to replace him?

Marvin Lewis said on Sunday that he wants to return as the coach of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018, but acknowledged the first move toward him doing so is ownership wanting him back for a 16th season. The win eliminated Baltimore from playoff contention, allowing the Bills to slide into the final playoff spot in the AFC.
