McConnell says he is optimistic Senate will approve stop-gap funding bill

Conservative Republicans are already beginning to cast blame of Democrats for any potential shutdown. Sen.

Congress is doing it, so you can do it, too.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) at a Capitol Hill news conference last week.

Republicans were trying to tamp down a conservative rebellion Wednesday and keep a stopgap spending bill on track ahead of a major vote Thursday, hoping to prove their party could govern and in the process trap Democrats in a shutdown showdown.

Whether the government shuts down or not, it seems certain that we’re headed for at least a few more days of brinksmanship.

Republican leaders in Congress, even though they control both the Senate and the House, have been struggling to cobble together support for a one-month spending measure extending funding to February 16. But dreamer protections don’t expire until March. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, said earlier in the week that he would vote for a short-term continuing resolution.

Thus, the strategy was created to produce either a win with virtually no GOP concessions, or a government shutdown that could pretty cleanly be blamed on Democrats. “It’s never been good for the party that’s blocking the funding for reasons irrelevant to the funding”.

Talks on immigration continued Wednesday, with White House officials dispatched to meet with an array of House and Senate players, but the parties emerged to say they had only agreed that House and Senate leaders would meet again on Thursday. Cotton, Grassley, and Perdue said in a statement last week. David Perdue, R-Ga., said Trump, “did not use that word”, and that multiple media accounts of the meeting were a “gross misrepresentation”.

Instead, the Wisconsin Republican mentioned it was “baffling” why Democrats would oppose the spending measure, noting it incorporates funds for the military and a extensively supported a children’s medical insurance program.

“I’m looking for something that President Trump supports, and he’s not yet indicated what measure he’s willing to sign”, McConnell told reporters.

Conservatives are frustrated by a lack of clarity about what Republican leaders will accept in upcoming immigration and spending negotiations with Democrats.

But Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the bipartisan deal’s Republican authors, said it would pass if Trump gets behind it. So there’s nothing left, and that means they need 60 votes in the Senate.

Frustrations over the immigration deadlock boiled over in NY, where three people were arrested protesting immigration policy, and in Washington, where police said 82 people were arrested in a Senate office building during a sit-in urging protection of immigrants.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer dismissed the Republican stopgap proposal. During previous shutdowns, lawmakers were advised that they did not have to furlough aides they needed to write laws, help them vote, or communicate with their constituents.

Democrats widely viewed as eyeing the White House in 2020-like Sens.

Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, the first black female Republican in Congress and the daughter of Haitian immigrants, denounced Trump’s comments as racist and called on him to apologize.

Just watch what happens. It’s often the case that looming deadlines can often jolt both sides back to the negotiating table. It will probably all come down to messaging. We need the Wall to help stop the massive inflow of drugs from Mexico, now rated the number one most unsafe country in the world.

But the positions of Harris, Booker and Gillibrand, all seen as viable prospects for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, have reflected the passion of the broader Democratic base – which is young, diverse and overwhelmingly supportive of hard-line tactics against Trump and congressional Republicans.

Come midnight Friday a government shutdown could occur cutting off all but emergency programs
