Influenza is a respiratory illness that usually consists of a high fever, coughing and body aches.
“Flu vaccination is the most effective protection against the flu”, said KDPH Epidemiologist Dr. Jonathan Ballard.
Malouf added that influenza can be lethal because it’s aerosolized.
Cold and flu medicines are flying off the shelves in pharmacies. Stomach flu consists of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
If you’ve been hospitalized with the virus or if you’re severely ill and suspect influenza, the CDC recommends you use antiviral treatment as soon as possible. “In two or three weeks, we will know if [the season] is starting to wane and the numbers are coming down”. “It’s not good from a public health standpoint”.
But according to Siegel, a universal flu vaccine is close to becoming a reality that would end the need for annual shots.
She said there have been more cases and outbreaks of flu this year. But it does help to prevent complications from the flu.
“This is a season that has a lot more steam than we thought”, Dr. Dan Jernigan of the CDC told the Associated Press.
“It’s really scary. I couldn’t imagine losing any of my daycare kids or any kid in my family over it”, said Thompson. Currently, emergency room admissions from the flu are at 7.8 percent.
Flu-related deaths are on the rise in Central Alberta with eight reported as of January 13 according to statistics released Thursday. The two men who died, in their 90s, had received flu vaccines but also had underlying medical conditions, the health department said.
“It takes about two weeks to get full immunity from it”.
Whiteningeffective vaccine, residents can take some simple steps to ward off the flu, Jernigan said.
Yale-New Haven Hospital, the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Department of Public Health with the City of New Haven addressed this season’s rampant outbreak of the flu on Friday at 11 a.m.in New Haven. There are other options rather than a shot to prevent illness. Pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems and those with chronic illnesses such as asthma, heart or kidney disease are also at high risk.

Government officials don’t learn about every case of the flu, since many sufferers never go to the doctor.
