According to MLive, more than 150 have now come forward to give victim-impact statements during the hearing which began on January 16.

But as victims watched other women give their statements, more consented to use their name. She’s a few years younger, maybe she dealt with that, and then maybe I’d have a completely different look on it. “I have a voice now, and I want to be heard”. Court officials initially said about 88 victims would speak during the sentencing, but dozens of others have come forward since, empowered by what Olympian Aly Raisman called the “army of survivors”.

As of Tuesday, 149 victims or victims’ families had spoken, and a total of 158 are expected, prosecutors said.

Victims have also expressed their reluctance to report Nassar because of his elevated status as a doctor in the gymnastics world. McKayla Maroney, Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas are among the women who have accused Nassar of abuse over the years. USA Gymnastics typically raises sponsorship money tied to its events, and in 2016, records show, the organization made $12.9 million from its events.
