Sonos shows off what HomePod is missing, offers discounts for Sonos One

So you’d think they would have used that opportunity to wet our appetites.
Nevertheless, the company promises that its speakers will support Apple’s AirPlay 2 protocol sometime in 2018, which will allow them to stream audio from any source and use Siri from an Apple device. Its small, aesthetically pleasing speakers broadcast high-quality audio, using WiFi and an app to keep buttons, dials, and wires to a minimum. The firm hasn’t given figures on revenue and profit, though at its peak in 2014, it said it was. The bass was strong without being too heavy, vocals were crisp and clear, and the overall sound felt somehow bright and energized. By comparison, the Sonos Ones and the Google Home Max both support Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and more.

The Amazon Echo and the Google Home sound good, but the HomePod elevates sound to another level. I also got a demo of a stereo setup using two HomePods – that functionality is coming later on through a free update – and was blown away.
It’s fortunate that these are things Siri can do already, but there is a ring of truth to this being what people most use their Echo or Google Home for.
Six months after it was revealed, the long wait for the release of Apple’s HomePod smart speaker is nearly over.
Granted, that list is growing nicely, but it’s still nowhere as long as the number of accessories that play nicely with Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant.
Apple’s HomePod is nearly here – you can pre-order one for $350 right now, and Apple says it’ll arrive on February 9. This is still slightly less than the Amazon Echo Plus, at $149, while the Google Home is even more expensive than the Apple HomePod, at a hefty price tag of $399. Google had a huge push on during the holidays with its Home device and many retailers offered it at a promotional price of $79.
Many questions have been raised about home assistant devices and exactly what they are listening to in your home.
Apple has spoken proudly of its ability to create a spacious soundstage, filling the room using echo cancellation and acoustic modelling technology to adapt the sound to the space it’s filling, sensing whether it’s in the middle of a room or up against a wall.
We got to compare it to a bunch of other smart speakers at the same volume. And that makes Apple’s HomePod more or less useless to me.

Sonos, of course, can partner with the best. Since Apple put Siri on the iPhone 4S in 2011, every one of its smartphones has come with the intelligent assistant baked in.
