As the country prepares to host the 2018 Winter Olympics in a raft of new sporting venues, the abandoned Alps Ski Resort, only around 100 kilometers (60 miles) away, stands in grim contrast, as the future of South Korea’s new facilities remains uncertain.
The U.S. did not take part in recent talks between North Korea and South Korea that have centered on participation in the upcoming Winter Olympics in February, but U.S. officials insisted that the two sides would not negotiate any details of the north’s nuclear program without the U.S. present.
Tensions between the USA and North Korea have soared over the past year amid a series of advancements in Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
South Korean military officials also have said the drills would resume but it’s too soon to disclose the exact date and size. The “bloody nose strategy”, as it has been dubbed, has reportedly been advocated by Trump’s National Security adviser H.R. McMaster, with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defence Secretary James Mattis said to be opposed to the move.
“They keep those transponders off and then they turn them back on as they round the South Korean peninsula, and they head into a Russian port”.
But in the absence of a nuclear shift, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is not ruling out the possibility of a limited military strike, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst said Friday.
Two Chinese companies were sanctioned for importing or exporting banned goods from North Korea.
The meeting was not set up “directly because of the Olympics”, he said.
Mattis made the remarks Friday during a photo session with South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo at US Pacific Command headquarters in Hawaii a day after Seoul’s top diplomat said a military solution would not be acceptable.
Tensions between North Korea and the US have spiked following Pyongyang’s sixth and largest nuclear test in September.

The hermit kingdom has announced plans for a world-class resort along the coastal Kangwon province – but the area also is used as a missile testing ground, the UK’s Sun reported. “We could fight tonight, shoulder to shoulder with the South Koreans, if they’re attacked”, the defense secretary told reporters en route from Vietnam to Hawaii. Mattis reaffirmed Washington’s ironclad security commitment to South Korea, including extended deterrence, and stressed North Korea will face an overwhelming response from the USA, if the regime ever attacked one of its allies.
