The Shape of Water leads Oscar nods with 13; Franco, Hanks snubbed

This year’s Academy Award nominations have tied a record for the most female nominees in a single year, but women still make up less than one-fourth of the total number of Oscar nominees.

The film’s star, Timothee Chalamet, also is nominated for his lead role in the film, and Guadagnino explained what makes Chalamet – who would be the youngest best actor Oscar victor ever, at 22 – so great. The award for Best Picture, for instance, could go to any of the nine nominees. If we move on to the Best Director category, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Jordan Peele. This year the fight looks intense because top directors with the top Performing Films are part of the event. Canadian acting legend Christopher Plummer was nominated for All The Money In The World, a movie I only heard about because the original actor who played John Paul Getty in the movie was Kevin Spacey and director Ridley Scott did some mad re-shoots in order get that guy out of it when Spacey’s controversy hit.

In 2016, following #OscarsSoWhite, progress was made in opening up membership of the Academy, with a large influx of new members of which 46% were women and 41% were people of colour. Angry that her child’s killer hasn’t been brought to justice, Mildred Hayes pays for three billboards to be covered in posters with a plea for justice.

Aside from my gushing over Get Out, other notable nominees include Call Me By Your Name, which was absolutely lovely and I’m incredibly excited it’s in there.

This year’s Oscar nominations have proven to be perhaps the most diverse and inclusive yet, and at the forefront of that is Octavia Spencer, who just scored her third consecutive nom for The Shape of Water. Unlike the Golden Globes, where nominations for Best Director were all male, the Oscars nominated Greta Gerwig for her highly acclaimed movie Lady Bird.

The nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences followed years of campaigning for equal pay and better opportunities behind the camera, a movement that has been boosted by women breaking their silence in recent months over sexual abuse and harassment in the entertainment industry.

“Mudbound’s” cinematographer Rachel Morrison is also making headlines as the first female cinematographer to be nominated for an Oscars. Yes, Willem Dafoe got a best-supporting-actor nomination, but this is a great film, one that deserves to be seen by more people – something a nomination would have done for it. Both the directors are in contention for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay awards.

“The Shape of Water” saw a 241% increase in ticket-sales over that time window, while “Lady Bird” saw a 102% increase.

The two front runners to win Best Picture are “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”.

Both performances were light-years better than Daniel Day-Lewis’ Phantom Thread or Timothy Chalamet’s Call Me By Your Name. Three films stand out as frontrunners this year. It’s possible the allegations may have alienated the actors’ branch, the ones who make the nominations.

James Franco had been viewed as a lead actor contender for his work in “The Disaster Artist”.

The 90th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 4th, with Jimmy Kimmel slated to host.
