Newport County’s Joe Day ‘proud’ of team’s performance at Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham booked their place in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win in their replay with the League Two side. They also – perhaps more pertinently, we’ll admit – very almost turned Spurs over at Rodney Parade a couple of Saturdays ago.

There should still be some big names in the lineup though, with the match likely to serve as Toby Alderweireld’s return to action after missing the last three months due to a hamstring injury.

Erik Lamela extended the home team’s lead in the 34th minute, gently caressing the ball past Newport’s Day.

Spurs had 26 shots but only scored twice.

“Our relationship has been fantastic and now we’re going to share some wine with Michael [Flynn, Newport manager] and the staff and of course to share our experiences, it is always good to share and learn from people and yes, a great opportunity to have a nice chat and share a glass of wine”.

On the other hand, Tottenham remain undefeated in 2018.

Son Heung-min is the only player to keep his place from the thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

Day did well to parry away Alli’s effort from 16 yards out soon after, and Michel Vorm was finally tested in stoppage time as he denied Scott Bennett from close range on the right to preserve his clean sheet.

For Newport, who endured their first defeat in seven matches against Colchester on Saturday, Ben White passed a late fitness test and Carlow-born Pádraig Amond, scorer in the first game, also started. Victor Wanyama had to take a yellow card to stop a break that was created after a giveaway from Juan Foyth.

It was 58-years to the week that Spurs had slain Fourth Division Crewe Alexandra by thirteen goals to two in a replay at the same stage of this particular competition.

MF Moussa Sissoko, 7 – Put in a good shift and was always on the move, making himself hard to mark by embarking on runs across the defence and in behind.

“But if we win on Wednesday and I don’t touch the ball and have an absolute shocker, I don’t care”.

The gaffer has strong depth in numbers and has an unmissable opportunity to start squad players, those who are still capable of handling Newport at Wembley. His goal was entirely deserved, and he later gave Llorente a free header at goal. The South Korea worldwide saw one shot blocked and another saved within a few seconds, while going close on a couple of other occasions. This time, Son wriggled forward and spotted Lamela. It got Spurs the 2-0 cushion they wanted, and they cruised home from there. Tottenham hogged possession and they made them work but Newport did not flag – even if Flynn jokingly wished Pochettino had not introduced Christian Eriksen and Alli as second-half substitutes.

And moments later the Spaniard once again broke free, volleying Eriksen’s good pass wide of the right-hand post with what ended up being another glaring miss.
