“The issues that you have raised, issues that have to do with corruption, issues of how we can straighten out our state-owned enterprises and how we deal with state capture (influence-peddling) are issues that are on our radar screen”, he said.

Ending a culture of graft, implementing reforms and placing capable technocrats at the top of state institutions are the first steps Ramaphosa will be expected to take.

Under Mr. Zuma, calls for radical economic transformation became louder, but there is little agreement on what exactly the phrase means.

Mmusi Maimane, leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance party, said Ramaphosa was being “at best a silent deputy president, and at worst a complicit one”.

He reached the goal on Thursday after forcing out Jacob Zuma, a longtime master of political survival, in a strategy that combined long-term vision, stealth and backroom skills.

“As I leave, I will continue to serve the people of South Africa as well as the ANC, the organization I have served all of my life”, he added.

He entered business, where he made a fortune, before returning to the political fray in 2012 and became deputy president in 2014.

The South African parliament has elected Cyril Ramaphosa as the country’s new president.

“I look forward to working closely with President Ramaphosa to help build a healthier, more secure and prosperous future for both our countries”.

Acting President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa listens to a debate at the South African Parliament in Cape Town.

It comes after the former President Jacob Zuma resigned his position last night.

But following a defeat in 1997, Ramapohosa left politics and transitioned to business.

Mugwadi said events in Zimbabwe and South Africa, “attest to the fact that Sadc has come of age in terms of peaceful management of transitions, and that Africa in its entirety must draw lifetime lessons from Zimbabwe and South Africa that power transfer can be done without unnecessary loss of blood”. Unemployment nationally now hovers at around 30 percent, and is even higher for young black citizens. Low growth rates and dwindling investor confidence were compounded by two credit agencies downgrading the economy to junk status.

One of the first steps in improving the investor confidence is addressing the persistent claims of corruption at the heart of government.

Mr Ramaphosa could well be on the cusp of finally realising that dream.

The same day, Zuma met Ramaphosa for one-on-one talks, which were described as “productive”.

Some will miss him though, pointing to achievements like announcing the abolition of fees for higher education, says the BBC’s Milton Nkosi in Johannesburg. He has now been officially “recalled” by the ANC, placing him under enormous pressure to resign.

South Africa’s economy has stagnated during Zuma’s nine-year tenure, with banks and mining companies reluctant to invest because of policy uncertainty and rampant corruption. Ajay Gupta is considered to be a fugitive after he failed to turn himself in, police told South African media.

Previous year the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that he must face 18 counts of corruption, fraud, racketeering and money laundering relating to a 1999 arms deal. The country’s courts are in the midst of investigating how 144 psychiatric patients died in 2016 when they were moved from a hospital to several ill-equipped NGOs.
