U.S. women headed for worst figure skating finish in Olympics
Flatt, a junior world champion and 2010 US winner, recalled training under Zakrajsek with numerous best men of her era. The jump is now the most hard in female figure skating, requiring the athlete to rotate 3.5 times in the air before landing on the opposite skate than the one from which they used to jump.

“I remember Mirai when she was just starting out”, said Meissner. She finished 11th in the world junior championships. The U.S. Figure Skating Association banned her for life after her motley crew of hangers-on bashed Nancy Kerrigan’s knee in 1994, launching one of the most freaky sports stories ever. “I had a renewed sense of motivation and was able to get down to business”. But it was Fleming’s dazzling performance in the French Alps that truly started an era of American domination, when the stars and stripes would fly for at least one medalist in every games through Sasha Cohen’s silver medal in Italy in 2006.
“HOLY COW!” Former Olympic U.S. figure skater and NBC sports commentator Tara Lipinski shouted after Mirai Nagasu attempted, and landed, a triple axel during the highly-anticipated team figure skating competition. Medvedeva, the two-time defending world champion, injured her right foot in November and missed the Grand Prix Final.
She then unleashed a spin with so much energy she actually over-rotated, sending her to the ice. Tennell was first on the ice and fell during the opening jump combination. Zakrajsek says she lands them 85% to 95% of the time. She kept her composure and slotted it in to achieve the most points possible, but the mistake still knocked her out of the podium race. “That’s where you’re on a backwards inside edge but it’s called and edge jump so you don’t put in your toe”. Tennell, who favors the motto, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it”, referenced that saying when she decided not to move away from IL to train, like most pro skaters do. She has skated clean short and long programs since she competed in Skate America and US nationals and debuted at the Olympics with a clean short program in the team event.
Stephenson said she only found out about Tennell being a skater by overhearing her talking about taking a trip to Lake Placid, N.Y., and asking why she was going there. The two-time Olympian received lots of attention for her team free skate program, where she became the first American woman in history to land a triple axel at the Olympics. However, she has one more chance to grab some hardware before she heads back home. “I’m glad my parents will experience the Olympics with me”.
Since they’ve arrived in Korea, her brothers, who play hockey, have visited the Olympic Village and already fantasized about all three of the siblings making the Olympic team in four years.
“I just knew as dedicated of a person as I am, I could get it done”, a determined Eccarius said.

Last year, U.S. Figure Skating reported its fourth straight year of membership growth. And in those 42 years of Olympic short programs, American women have never done as badly as today.
