After the unbelievable victory of the women cricket team, the nation looks forward to the Indian men’s cricket team’s match against South Africa which is scheduled at 9:00 PM IST. For India, it will be important to end the series on a winning note after being ruled of the contest having lost the first two Test matches.
That three of South Africa’s partnerships ended in the twenties, the highest being a seventh-wicket stand of 29 between Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp, underlined their inability to deal with the lack of pace from the Indian attack, aided by some agile fielding.
A blistering 49 off just 24 balls (5×4, 2×6) nearly stole the match – and series – from the gaping jaws of defeat, as Jonker reduced the run-rate from close to 15 runs an over to just 12 required off three balls. The first instance was against Zimbabwe in 2013.
The South African duo of David Miller and JP Duminy struggled to find answers to India’s sensational bowling, resulting in the required run rate creeping up to over eleven runs an over. They have won three of their five ODIs. It was a direct hit from the bowler as the batsman failed to reach the crease. Up against Dala’s speed and the two-paced wicket, Manish Pandey and MS Dhoni both fell while trying and failing to clear the fence.
Rohit led the side. Shikhar Dhawan, after a slow start, gradually gained momentum and spanked a few to the boundaries.
Kohli had became the 10th captain since 2002 to get his hands on the mace when he received it from Gavaskar following the Indore Test against New Zealand in 2016. Kohli finished the series with 558 runs with three centuries, a record for an Indian batsman, and one fifty in six innings. However, the Proteas pacer pinned Rohit Sharma in front of the stumps and gave his team the much-needed breakthrough. Kohli’s scores in the series were 112, 46*, 160*, 75, 36 & 129*.
Former skipper MS Dhoni became the third wicket-keeper to take 600-plus catches in worldwide cricket during the fifth ODI at Centurion.
