FIRST ALERT FORECAST: Heavy rain moving in today; watch for street flooding

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-20s overnight, with the chance of precipitation near 100 percent, the weather service said. This could cause areas of freezing rain and icy spots on the roads. We’ll have to continue monitoring the late afternoon hours as colder air starts to move back into the area and temperatures will have an impact on what precipitation type falls.

The National Weather Service Hanford office reports Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the Sierra Foothills and the Kern County Mountains for this evening through Friday morning.

Thursday, freezing rain is likely before 2 p.m., followed by a chance of rain, according to the weather service.

There even remains the chance of snow flurries on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Over 75 schools canceled classes on Wednesday due to the weather. Schools were closed in the northern in city because of the flooding, and an emergency shelter was set up, The Elkhart Truth newspaper reported. The weather service issued winter weather advisories for parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, North Dakota, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The University of Kansas, Wichita State University, Emporia State University, Newman University and Haskell Indian Nations University closed Thursday.

After the winter weather moves out of Oklahoma City this evening, another round could follow it. The closure is until further notice.

Travel conditions across the state are quickly deteriorating Wednesday evening after icy weather has created risky road conditions, according to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
