Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle: A faded legacy

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah led Liverpool to an easy-enough win in the Premier League.

Klopp says that luck has a part to play in his squad being injury-free and believes the ability to have his best players available for crunch fixtures will boost his side, as it did for league champions Chelsea last season.

With nine league games and, in all likelihood, at least three European ties left in Liverpool’s season, Salah should have the 36 goals scored by Robbie Fowler, 22 years ago, well within his sights.

As has become his standard practice against the Premier League’s elite, Benitez sent Newcastle out in an ultra-defensive formation, yet the Magpies might still have gone in at the interval on level terms from their only noteworthy attack of the game.

He also managed to surpass Luis Suarez’s goal record from the Uruguayan’s incredible PFA Player of the Year season in 2014.

Mikel Merino is ready to return to the Premier League fray – and give his all for Newcastle United.

“We knew when we signed him he’s a very offensive midfielder, a striker rather than a holding six, so they all have to be flexible”, Klopp told BT Sport. We always try to help each other and we work as a team. We were 2-0 up [at Anfield in April 2016] and drew 2-2, and at Newcastle he knew [the 1-1 draw in October 2017] was lucky for them.

Islam Slimani, yet to make his Newcastle debut after joining from Leicester City on loan in January, is also a doubt.

Newcastle pegged them back eight minutes later through Les Ferdinand while David Ginola then put the visitors in front in a frantic opening 15 minutes.

“I think the better sides have come here and when they go toe-to-toe with Liverpool they cause Liverpool problems”. Murphy and Kenedy struggled to get the ball to him when Newcastle did break forward. There’s a lot of draws at the bottom end of the table.

Newcastle have an impressive defence at their disposal which has raised its game in big matches this season. Their run of results includes a rather shocking 1-0 win over Manchester United at home, and this sees them with a slender two-point advantage over clubs in the relegation places.

Newcastle were still in the game, and Mohamed Diame forced a fine side from Loris Karius with a shot from outside the box late in the half. They are really good.

Mane increased Liverpool’s lead in the 56th minute.
