NFL Combine: What we learned from Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield other quarterbacks

Will he be ready to start Week 1? “If anybody’s going to turn that franchise around, it’s going to me”. What you see is what you get. If you can get to three or four reads into your progression, you give yourself more opportunities to get the ball down the field. So that’s where I think my best attribute is. That’s something I’ve really been working on. “A team is evaluating not just how good you are on a scale of 1 to 10, but how good of a fit you are for their team….” I’m here now at the combine to show off my abilities. “What you see is what you get, I’ve always been brutally honest and some people don’t like that because it’s rare nowadays”. “That’s gotten me to this point, so when we talk about it, I’m upfront about it”.

“I’m looking forward to drawing my own conclusions because I’ve heard so many different things out there about all the quarterbacks”, Elway said. “I’ve never been like that, and I never will”. I’m going to remember what it feels like to be doubted and how fantastic it feels to overcome that doubt. “Hopefully a lot of good comes from it. Tyler will always be a part of us”. There will be plenty of old-school coaches who will be turned off by his style, but the fire that burns within Mayfield is obvious, and some – including teammates I’ve spoken to – find it inspiring. “If you’re not improving it and pushing those guys around you to be better, then you’re not doing it right”.

Few players drew a larger media contingent, and fewer still will be asked tougher questions during interviews with teams.

Mayfield (Feb. 19) will be at the National Football League combine next week and is projected as a possible first-round pick in the draft in April. “Obviously there’s still some work to do”. “I think that’s for other people to decide”.

“I’ll do everything I can do to win”, he said. Washington thinks his aggressiveness stands out more than others. “I don’t think it really played into the equation at all”, he said.

“I’m not trying to change my throwing motion at all”. I let them know exactly what I’m about, and I think that is the most important thing. They’re not rookies when they’re stepping on the field.

One of the biggest questions for a player coming from a relatively small program is, can they handle the big stage? Sometimes it’s founded. Many times it’s not.

The Browns have to re-start somewhere just as they do every single season.

During his NFL Scouting Combine press conference Friday, Mayfield was borderline cocky and at times defiant, while talking about his hopes to thrive in the NFL. He’s also uber-competitive. That was evident when Mayfield was asked about the possibility of backing up Manning this year with the Giants.

Rosen compares favorably to Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons, Jared Goff of the Los Angeles Rams and Teddy Bridgewater of the Minnesota Vikings.

“He’s going to come back in the offseason program and it’s up to Breshad [to determine if this will be a breakout season]”. Some guys kind of get anxious about it.

Whether any of those players exist in this year’s class remains to be seen. “Whether they can, or do you want to put them in that position?” And Mayfield doesn’t shy away from them. While Dorsey traded up to pick the 6-2, 230-pound Patrick Mahomes at No. 10 previous year in Kansas City, that’s not quite the same as using a top-5 pick and hanging the hopes of a moribund franchise around the neck of the 6-0 Mayfield.
