Michael Carrick wants Manchester United to establish themselves as a Champions League force once more as Old Trafford prepares to host a first knockout game in four years.

Mourinho confirmed Paul Pogba is a doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Sevilla after picking up an injury in training last week, as he suggested his side’s victory over Liverpool will count for little unless they back it up with wins in their next two games.

“We have to beat Sevilla to go through, so we give our best”. “We are going to try to prove that we are better [than the first leg]”. Now sat 16 points adrift of their noisy neighbours, United’s primary attention has turned to securing Champions League football at Old Trafford next season.

“We can split the halves – United first half and Liverpool second but in my opinion our first half was a half with goals and danger”.

Papastathopoulos has been scouted by United and would apparently cost around £20m, while Alderweireld would be a considerably more expensive option, though he’s obviously proven in the Premier League.

This season, he has played 17 times but increasingly in the bigger games.

“We are a strong team once we take the lead”.

United were excellent against Liverpool despite the absence of Pogba and the Red Devils will be confident they can overcome Sevilla at home and book their place in the quarter-finals.

He said: “We have to forget this defeat and think about Tuesday”.

Where is Manchester United vs Sevilla being played? “When you are in the last 16, it looks really, really far but, when a team gets in the last eight, you start smelling the semi-finals”. Away in London a week later, at Crystal Palace, a typically frustrating lethargic and complacent performance at Selhurst Park seemed to be set to put United into third.

“There’s lots of things (I’m learning). The more you do, the easier the results come on the pitch”.

“I don’t think a player from a club like Barcelona and a national team like Chile is easy”.

“That’s modern football. We have to live within that environment and cope with it”. “For all Liverpool’s possession, they could not produce a decent chance”.
