Temperatures may climb into the mid-60s today, but winter lurks around the corner.

Snow is expected Friday and Saturday, forecasts from he National Weather Service show. Highs on Friday will occur early in the day with temperatures falling during the afternoon as gusty north winds at 20 to 30 miles per hour develop.

Early April snow is rare around North Carolina but not unheard of, Gardner said. Much of the precipitation will be falling as snow but we could see a wintry mix developing by the afternoon, which would cut down on snowfall.

The temperature will fall to 31 by 5 p.m. Friday, according to the weather service. That cloud cover will keep high temperatures stuck in the 40s, even with a breezy south and southeast wind at 10 to 20 miles per hour. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.

Friday will start with damp conditions after some overnight light rain and snow. Highs will reach 35 to 45 Saturday, the 40s Sunday and Monday, and maybe some low 50s Tuesday and Wednesday. Snow totals will be between 1 to 2 inches mainly on grassy areas. Winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour. The low will be around 27.
