In 2011, Reed became a professional golfer when he was 20 years old. Spieth had won 25 percent of the Masters he has played in, and been in contention for almost every other one as well.
Rounding out the Australian contingent was 2013 Masters victor Adam Scott, who signed off on his campaign with a respectable 71 to share 32nd at one-over.
If anybody appreciates how tenuous a lead can be at Augusta National, it is Spieth, who led by five strokes heading into the back nine of the 2016 Masters. “It’s just going to be one of those days you just need to go out and be able to put your nose to the grind and just play some golf”. Sometimes, from the moment the caddie pulls the flag, you know. “Can you handle the ups and downs throughout the round?'”
The final day was billed as a match-up between Ryder Cup rivals and final group playing partners Reed and Rory McIlroy.
Now, he’s well in the running for his second green jacket and fourth major victory. “And it wasn’t quite what we both had in mind”.
The 2015 Masters champion pushed his tee shot at the par-4 first way right. He did help lead Augusta State to a pair of national championships, so he’s clearly very skilled with the clubs. “I knew every shot was important, but I didn’t really know exactly where I was, until 18, which means I was pretty gutted at the finish”. “Not only did it fuel my fire a little bit, but also, it just takes the pressure off of me and adds it back to him”. He putted from the fringe to 6 feet and then drained it, flashing the kind of putter prowess that carried him (10 putts) on the back nine in the opening round Thursday. Fowler did his best with three birdies in a four-hole stretch, and an 8-foot birdie on the final hole.
McIlroy looked like getting on level terms after a spectacular approach to the par-five second, but was unable to convert the eagle putt from four feet and that would prove to be as close as he would get to the lead.
But he was soon back on top with a birdie at 14, and after missing out on another at 15, he safely negotiated the final three holes in par, with impressive saves at 17 and 18 securing a narrow victory ahead of Fowler.
The 14-time major champion had three birdies and three bogeys on the front nine, but birdied the par-5 13th and sank a 29-foot eagle putt at the par-5 15th to stand 3-under Sunday, 1-over overall.
“Patrick, he’s not scared”.
‘I can’t tell you how much I missed competing in the majors in general and the Masters in particular, ‘ he said, poignantly. “He’ll play aggressive, he’ll play his game”. “I believe that if I play the golf that I know how to play that I can win majors”.
“You had to ride the momentum and keep it going”.
Reed’s life story has some jagged edges. “I missed playing out here”. He has denied reports he had cheated in a qualifying tournament and stolen from teammates.

“I’m not out there to play Rory, I’m out there to play the golf course”, said American Reed, who fired a spectacular third round five-under-par 67 to top the leaderboard on 14-under. The player so many fans wanted to see was about done. The shot on the par 3 landed dead on the green and rolled straight into the cup, giving Hoffman an ace on one of the most impressive shots we saw all weekend.
