He added that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was responsible for the gas attack in Douma, a rebel-held suburb last week.

The Syrian opposition, however, said the strikes would not change much in the country.

The U.S. -Russia communication line, called a deconfliction channel, has been active since the strikes, officials said. “Could not have had a better result”.

While hailing the military later in the day, Trump praised the “perfectly executed” airstrikes against the Syrian regime.

“Any unilateral military action that bypasses the Security Council runs contrary to the objective and principles of the United Nations charter”, Hua said, calling for world powers to resolve the Syria conflict through dialogue and negotiation.

“Russia convenes an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss aggressive actions of the USA and its allies”, Putin said in a statement published on the Kremlin Web site.

As the two sides traded barbs, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged an end to military action and a turn to diplomacy.

Footage broadcast on Syrian state TV shows what is suspected to be a chemical weapons research centre, thought to have been hit by the recent air strikes.

While the Syrian government employed 40 surface-to-air-missiles in response, “none of our aircraft or missiles involved in this operation were successfully engaged by Syrian air defenses”, McKenzie said. “There has been a 2,000 percent increase in Russian trolls in the last 24 hours”.

The Syrians said as many as 16 people were killed in the strikes, including nine civilians in the surrounding area.

“The attack took place after the colonial forces which support the terrorists realized that they have lost control. and that they have lost their credibility in front of their people and the world”, said Assad.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said the situation in Syria “is worrying to the worldwide community, including Russian Federation”. “They spread democracy by killing the president of Libya, where is Libya now, if this is democracy we need dictatorship, we don’t need democracy if there democracy anywhere on earth it is in India, we don’t trust American democracy, western democracy, under the name of democracy they make war against other countries”.

Russia, Iran and China all condemned the attacks.

The U.S. and its allies also fired 22 missiles at the Him Shinshar chemical weapons storage site – the primary location of Syria’s sarin gas – and seven missiles at the Him Shinshar chemical weapons bunker.

French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May released statements. This time, our allies and we have struck harder.

Ahead of the latest strikes, Japanese government sources said Japan would support Trump’s “resolve” to prevent the use of chemical weapons instead of expressing support for the airstrikes themselves in order to preserve relations with Russian Federation.

As recently as last week, Trump had been saying that he wanted the U.S.to withdraw its forces from Syria.

At a Pentagon briefing, Dunford said “this wave of airstrikes is over”, but defense officials added they are prepared for a sustained campaign until the Syrian regime ceases its alleged use of chemical weapons. “The matter should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations and on the basis of the principles of the UN Charter and in accordance with the global law”, it said.

Haley blasted Russia for protecting Syria and said Moscow has emboldened the Syrian regime to continue its attacks, while the Russian ambassador to the United Nations said Washington had embarked on an “illegal military adventure”.
