Ahead of the latest strikes, Japanese government sources said Japan would support Trump’s “resolve” to prevent the use of chemical weapons instead of expressing support for the airstrikes themselves in order to preserve relations with Russian Federation.
As recently as last week, Trump had been saying that he wanted the U.S.to withdraw its forces from Syria.
At a Pentagon briefing, Dunford said “this wave of airstrikes is over”, but defense officials added they are prepared for a sustained campaign until the Syrian regime ceases its alleged use of chemical weapons. “The matter should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations and on the basis of the principles of the UN Charter and in accordance with the global law”, it said.
