Twitter overflows with love for Jason Witten following his retirement

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said of Witten: “He’s simply the best example I know, of what you want a football player and a person to be, on and off the field”.

“I don’t think it’s our place to be talking him into something”, Jones said Wednesday (via the Dallas Morning News).

Another in an impressive line of Stanford products to play the position, Schultz comes from the same mold as Witten, a complete tight end who can be a factor in both the running and passing games.

Meanwhile, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported a different network provided another “interesting” offer that could make his decision more hard.

The Cowboys planned a news conference on Thursday afternoon with Witten.

The best part? The Cowboys were leading 35-10 at the time and could’ve easily milked the clock if Witten just settled for a mere 20-yard catch for a first down.

The question is: Is the 11-time Pro Bowler and two-time All Pro a Hall of Famer?

Witten, though, was not able to feature in an NFC championship game and help end a current 23-year drought without a Superbowl win for a team with five Lombardi trophies. Garrett had tried to persuade him to return for a 16th National Football League season. Instead he leaves tied with Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Bill Bates and Mark Tuinei.

Witten will now reportedly become an analyst for ESPN on Monday Night Football.

After Cole Beasley muffed a punt in the final minutes of an October 25, 2015 loss in New York, Witten caught up to him walking off the field and put his arm around him as they exited the field to a chorus of hecklers.

Jerry Jones was aware of the possibility Witten could be done playing before Friday’s report.

The Cowboys drafted Witten in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft and he spent 15 years with the team making an impact nearly immediately.

The Cowboys will give Jason Witten all the time he needs to make a decision on his future. His last pair of trips to the playoffs turned out to be close losses to the Green Bay Packers, halting what could have been deep runs to the Super Bowl in each instance.
