Manhattan DA Starts Investigation of Assault Allegations Against Eric Schneiderman

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed it is probing the allegations against Schneiderman, and New York Police Department officials said they also want to question the women leveling abuse charges against the divorced Democratic politician whose career is now in shambles. Others in Albany called for a women to be the state’s next AG. Heastie said afterwards that they “didn’t discuss candidates”, but considered the Legislature’s role in the process.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the allegations against Schneiderman are “deeply disturbing”, and he credits the women who came forward. The women say some of the alleged abuse occurred in the Hamptons in Suffolk County and one says he drove drunk there.

The group’s Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens did call for his resignation Monday evening saying his public and private actions “did not match”. “It shows a duplicity of character”.

State law gives the Legislature the authority to appoint a successor to the attorney general with a joint vote by the Senate and Assembly.

In his statement, Mr. Schneiderman said the allegations would interfere with his ability to carry out his job.

“No one is above the law, including New York’s top legal officer”, Cuomo said. I commend these strong women for standing up, speaking out and sharing their stories which will hopefully empower other victims to speak out against violence.

And we saw pictures of that mark. “I could not.” Manning Barish said she was involved with Schneiderman from mid-2013 through the end of 2014, while Selvaratnam said she was involved with him from the summer of 2016 until fall 2017. And they, to a one, went to pains to clarify that that is not what they are alleging. The NYPD said it has no complaints on file involving Schneiderman. Last month, Cliff Rosenberg resigned as Ohio House speaker amid an FBI investigation that may be widening.

The details in the New Yorker report indeed hit the political world like a bomb, genuinely stunning many who have watched the attorney general’s rise to top prosecutor and one of the country’s most outspoken opponents to the Trump agenda. “New Yorkers deserve an independent watchdog who will pursue corruption no matter the party, the perpetrator or the office holder”, said Molinaro.

Gillibrand, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (a former NY senator) did not respond to a request for comment.

Spitzer, 58, was a popular governor of NY when his career collapsed in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal. Some academic work has suggested that states with capitals that are distant from major media and population centers are more likely to have problems, due to lack of oversight and public interest. “I kicked. In every fiber, I felt I was being beaten by a man”, Barish told the New Yorker.

He says they haven’t yet started talking about specific candidates. More recently, Schneiderman has pushed for the state to alter its laws so that his office could prosecute those people connected to Trump who may get pardoned by the president. Such prominent Democrats as Cuomo and Sen. His representatives also sent a statement from his ex-wife, Jennifer Cunningham, who said, “I’ve known Eric for almost 35 years as a husband, father and friend”.

But Cuomo strongly suggested New York’s political leaders were in the dark about the attorney general’s alleged actions.

“The people will make the ultimate decision, which is the way it should be”, he said.

In office in NY since 2011 and a critic of President Donald Trump as well as disgraced producer Weinstein, Schneiderman responded via Twitter with a statement, saying he did not “cross the line”.
