Price, Donaldson lead surging Blue Jays’ 9-2 rout of Angels

Los Angeles is 14-5 in its last 19 games against the Blue Jays, including a 5-2 record at home.

I’ve been backing the BLue Jays for much of their hot streak, but Heaney is one kid who is capable of getting the Angels back on track. Estrada has been a steady presence in the Blue Jays’ starting rotation and has already cleared the 10-win mark for the first time in his big-league career. Victorino raced in and attempted a sliding catch, the ball nicking off his glove for an error that allowed two runs to score.

Price has been the ace the Jays sought prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline and is 2-0 with a 1.61 earned-run average in three starts. He struck out four and walked four.

The offense got off to a quick start, scoring 3 in the first inning, helped along by 4 walks given out by Angels starter Hector Santiago and a Shane Victorino error in left.

While numbers haven’t favored Mike Trout defensively (he ranks 27th among all qualified outfielders with a 1.9 UZR), he’s still one of the games premier defenders in center field. They also fell 3 1/2 games behind first-place Houston in the AL West. Part of the reason why he has so many runs scored and RBI is because he plays in a premier spot for the MLB’s best offense. Cron dropped Russell Martin’s popup behind the bag in the third inning and booted Ben Revere’s sharp grounder in the fourth. Before the season started, Trout was as close to being a lock as you can get for the MVP trophy, and Donaldson being right there with him is no small feat.

“Give guys like Price a 3-0 lead, it’s nothing definite, but that’s the reason he’s here”, manager John Gibbons said.

The left-hander hasn’t missed much while walking only 10 in 63 innings, a positive sign after Hector Santiago walked four of the first six hitters he faced Friday.

When asked if there were any comparisons between this year’s team and the teams he won the World Series with, Alomar said: “We’re not playing no more and I don’t want to compare teams”.

After Donaldson drove in Toronto’s eight run with a double in the top of the eighth, LA’s Kole Calhoun touched Price for a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.

Trout went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk.

Trout looked at a 95-mph fastball, then swung through an off-speed pitch.

Again, Mike Trout is simply on pace to have one of his prototypical monster seasons. 191 this month with a home run and five RBIs. He can change speeds with his fastball, throwing that changeup, slider, cutter. “They were going anywhere from 91 to 97, 98 (mph), so that’s why he’s good”. Edwin Encarnacion popped a ball to short right field that Cron and second baseman Ryan Jackson played like newborn deer on a frozen pond.

“We have our eyes on the people in front of us”.

“You know it’s positive, but putting absolute number on it is very hard to determine”, he said. I’ll take the result.

The Angels had just six hits. The Angels got their other run on doubles by Cron and Chris Iannetta in the fifth inning.

Smoaked it: Justin Smoak put the game on ice in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run shot to left that gave Toronto a 7-1 lead. It was No. 12 for Smoak.
