M’Baye Niang pounces to secure Senegal victory after Poland mix-up

Senegal became the first African team to win at this year’s Fifa World Cup, defeating Poland 2-1 on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ Time) on a first-half own-goal and a controversial second-half strike by Mbaye Niang.

Poland midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak played the ball back from inside the Senegal half but the defence failed to notice that M’Baye Niang, who had been on the touchline receiving treatment, had re-entered the field.

Poland and Senegal round off the first round of World Cup group fixtures on Tuesday evening as both sides look to make a positive start to Group H. “Humility is very important for this team”, he said. “I felt there was something on and was able to get in there and score”.
