Bernie Sanders congratulates progressive candidates on shock primary wins
It came in a New York City district that exemplifies the country’s changing demographics. Ted Kennedy. In representing the immigrant-heavy 14th Congressional district, which includes the Bronx and Queens, she wants to create a “political revolution”. I mean, you even have, even though Stacey Abrams won her campaign previous year resoundingly, I mean last month resoundingly, there was still a battle and a fight to get support from outside of establishment DNC groups to support her.

“The way you take over the Democratic Party is you support progressive women of color who know how to f–ing organize”.
Here’s what you need to know about Ocasio-Cortez, a former bartender who will likely become the youngest congresswoman ever.
When asked by CNN’s Poppy Harlow why she would lend her support to impeachment, Ocasio-Cortez pointed to the president’s alleged violation of the emoluments clause. Her father ran his own small business and her Puerto Rican mother cleaned houses. In April, a secret recording was leaked, of House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer telling progressive candidate Levi Tillemann, who was running in Colorado’s Sixth District, that he should get out of the race to make room for Jason Crow, the candidate favored by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Less certain is whether Ocasio-Cortez’s win means mainstream Democrats across the US-including NY governor Andrew Cuomo, who harbors presidential ambitions and faces a September primary against the progressive Cynthia Nixon (paywall)-are vulnerable to challenges from the left.
“We talked to people throughout the Midwest, visited Flint, Michigan; and finally ended our trip with a stay at Standing Rock”, she said, referring to the protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. “She would engage in political discussions passionately”. You can check out that short, billed as “The 28-Year-Old Latina Challenging New York’s Most Powerful Congressman” below. “We’ve got people. They’ve got money”, Ocasio-Cortez said in the ad. “Our party is a big tent, our districts are very different, one from the other”, she said.
Ocasio-Cortez, a former Bernie Sanders campaign organizer, threw a spotlight on the Democratic Party’s search for a new identity in the age of President Trump.
Holtzman is offering two pieces of what she calls “common sense” advice: First, Ocasio-Cortez needs to develop a deep appreciation for the city’s pizza because she’ll be eating a lot on the go. She advocates for housing as a human right and says on her campaign website that she is in favor of expanding the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, which provides tax incentives to encourage developers to build affordable housing. She took no corporate donations. “There’s a radical empathy that she has with people”.
During her campaign, she criticised Mr Crowley on his ties to Wall Street and accused him of being out of touch with his increasingly diverse constituents.
Crowley overwhelmingly outspent Ocasio-Cortez, by a margin of 18 to one, but it wasn’t enough.
Ocasio-Cortez represents the future of the Democratic party. Joseph Crowley in the House Democratic primary for District 14.
Ocasio-Cortez and Sullivan were both student speakers at BU’s Martin Luther King Jr.
