President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh to succeed retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy. And Democrats on Capitol Hill have vowed to do everything they can to delay Kavanaugh’s confirmation until after the midterms, with the hope that they can take control of the Senate and effectively stop it.

Administration officials told Politico that Trump spent the most time with Kavanaugh out of the other three candidates – he was interviewed at least twice – and was impressed with Kavanaugh’s credentials and “fidelity to the Constitution”, in Politico’s words. “The stakes are high for the LGBT community”.
Republicans called the choice a triumph and rallied behind Kavanaugh.
Republicans control the Senate with a 51-49 majority.
Wesolowski also said Kavanaugh would be hostile to the Affordable Care Act and to workplace protections for Americans. “He is widely admired for his intellect, experience and exemplary judicial temperament”, he said.

The pressure will be most intense on Sens. Republicans are targeting Democrats up for re-election in states President Donald Trump won in 2016 – of which there are 10, not including Sen. Kavanaugh’s evolved view on the subject could have implications for President Trump.
Abortion will be perhaps the key issue in upcoming confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh. But a controversial Supreme Court pick could test the boundaries of their willingness to buck the rest of the Democratic Party.
Georgia U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson also issued a statement regarding the nomination. “Hopefully it’s efficient, we get it done quickly”, he said, adding later, “In the end, I think his record will speak for itself”.
