Prime Minister Tony Abbott is expecting to bring at least seven members of his frontbench with him when he relocates his Government to the far north of Queensland on Sunday for the promised annual week in a remote Indigenous community.

AUSTRALIAN air strikes against IS may be expanded from Iraq into Syria in the coming weeks.

“I have certainly asked Mr Abbott to explain to us the legal basis of what’s proposed and the case behind it because these are not matters which should be rushed into”, he told reporters in Hobart on Saturday. The sort of work that we’re doing in Iraq to extend into the border area of Syria. Obviously it’s a very serious request, we’ll take it very seriously.

Mr Brownlee said there had been no similar request from US to New Zealand, nor was one expected.

“When it comes to fighting terror we are all in this together.but what we want to make sure of is we get the right information”, Mr Shorten said.

According to the Australian prime minister, ISIS is “almost incalculable unfathomable evil”. The United States has made a formal appeal to Australia to play an extended part in the coalition forces attack in Syria.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten is seeking a reassurance on the legality of Australian warplanes bombing Syria but has underscored Labor’s bipartisanship over the war against Islamic State.

“What Tanya Plibersek does is she says that she supports the Labor position, the coalition position, but then she always moves a little bit to the left and has a slap at Bill Shorten on the way through”, Bishop said.

“This is an opportunity in this electorate to put down some markers to Mr Abbott and his Liberals to say enough is enough”.

Asked directly if she believed the government was getting the adequate support from Labor which is the standard practice on issues of national security and defence, Ms Bishop said it was not.
