Archer pitches 1-hitter, fans 11 as Rays beat Astros 1-0

The win gave the Rays a split of the four-game series against Houston, which prepares for a huge interleague series this weekend with the Dodgers in town.

Archer was simply magnificent.

Archer is the first pitcher in franchise history to throw a one-hitter in a complete-game 1-0 victory and only the fourth to throw a one-hitter in a shutout, joining Joe Kennedy (2002), Matt Garza (2008) and James Shields (2008).

The righty, who is one of Dallas Keuchel’s main contenders in the American League Cy Young race, made sure the Astros wouldn’t get their fourth walk-off win of the week and third in a row.

Archer was so good that Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash never came close to having someone up in the bullpen. However, it was enough with Archer dealing. He’s got every pitch and he had it tonight. I don’t know if that was his best because I’m not around him on a day-to-day basis. McHugh answered by inducing a pair of fly balls round a stroll that loaded the bases, and he allowed only one further baserunner over his remaining three innings of labor, a single by Rivera within the seventh.

Mike Foltynewicz (4-5) gave up seven runs in 4 2-3 innings.

In his most recent outing, McHugh pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one run, striking out seven and walking two in a 4-2 loss to the Tigers. “I did that early, getting the first nine outs at home”. “It’s part of it. Everyone goes through it. It’s just a matter of how quick you can turn it around”.

When they are outhit, the Rays are 11-38.

Archer brought his entire catalogue to the ballpark.

Adeiny Hechavarria had two hits to extend his career-best hitting streak to 13 games for the Marlins, who have won four of five while scoring at least six runs in all five games.

Marwin Gonzalez had three hits and his 10th-inning leadoff homer lifted the Houston Astros to a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. “Collin just had no margin for error”. The 26-year-old right-hander owns a 2.77 ERA and 205/42 K/BB ratio in 169 innings across 26 starts this season.

In late Might, right-hander Chris Archer started a three-start stretch of double-digit strikeout, zero-walk performances – a string of outings so completely dominant that his ascent might not be denied.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year didn’t take the field for the Texans’ first preseason game against the 49ers on Saturday, but that didn’t mean he went the day without a highlight because – I mean, come on – it’s J.J. Watt we’re talking about here. In the fifth inning, Colby Rasmus pulled a grounder through the shift. Hickey also liked the high percentage of pitches Archer executed.

“When I’m on the baseball field I feel like the big guy”, he said. Whereas he did not dominate to the extent that Archer did, he repeatedly responded when hassle arose, notably within the prime of the third. The Astros have a 12-40 record when opponents outhit them.
