Mets beat Rockies by same 14-9 score for 2nd straight day

The New York Mets are looking to stretch their lead in the National League East but haven’t been playing well the past week. The homer was No. 30 this season for Arenado.

By the third inning’s conclusion, every position player in the Mets lineup had an extra-base hit with the exception of Friday’s hero, Cespedes.

The Mets quickly broke open the game when Uribe drove an 0-2 offering from Rusin over the center-field fence. He singled in the eighth and doubled in the first.

Colon lasted just 3⅔ innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out just one.

Cespedes became the third major leaguer since 1920 with at least three homers, five hits, seven RBIs and a stolen base, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Reb Russell did it on August. 8, 1922 for the Pirates against the Phillies. Colorado nearly took the lead in the fifth when Kyle Parker hit what looked like a sacrifice fly to right, but Granderson fired a throw home to retire Hundley.

That power was needed Friday night as Bartolo Colon could not get out of the fourth inning.

The New York Mets roughed up the Colorado Rockies by the exact same 14-9 score for the second straight day, with Juan Uribe homering to start an eight-run burst in the third inning Saturday night.

“All I had in my mind was, ‘Go for third, ‘” said Cespedes, who was acquired July 31 from the Detroit Tigers for highly regarded pitching prospect Michael Fulmer.

Bumgarner crushed a Jeff Locke (6-8) fastball 418-feet over the wall in left field in the second inning, a two-run shot that gave the Giants an early four-run lead and all the cushion Bumgarner would need on the mound. “I think I’ll cherish it more when the season is over”, he said of his milestone homer. The Mets scored eight runs on eight hits in the inning and batted around for the second time in as many nights. They used six pitchers, all of whom allowed runs. Colorado’s Gonzalez, Ben Paulsen and Nolan Arenado also homered on a night when the ball was flying out of Coors Field.

Cespedes answered with a solo shot off Rockies reliever Christian Bergman into center field in the top of the fourth to give the Mets an 8-1 lead.

It seemed like a questionable decision to keep Colon in the game after the injury, and judging by the size of the bruised lump, it’s possible his next start could be in jeopardy.

Yoenis Cespedes put on quite a show at Coors Field.

“I loved it”, said Niese, who laced the two-run single.

With Daniel Murphy on base, Cespedes responded again. New York hit two more home runs against Gonzalez Germen in the seventh, both of the solo variety from Travis d’Arnaud and Conforto, to extend the lead to 12-8.

Gilmartin did yeoman’s work for the Mets’ limited bullpen, bailing them out after Colon’s second shortest start of the season – he went just 2.1 innings against the Padres last month.
