WWE’s John Cena grants wish for sick young boy

WWE superstar John Cena spends a lot of his non-wrestling time popping up in movies and TV shows and, it seems, playing genie: Coming Soon reports that the Trainwreck actor will soon grant his 500th wish via the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Well, this morning on Today, Cena officially crossed the 500 wishes barrier, something no other celebrity has come close to achieving. The wrestler has used his “Never give up” tagline outside the ring as an inspirational message for sick kids. I’m at the finish line.

Cena surprised him on the set with a championship belt and tickets for Monday’s show.

Cena, who’s long held the title for the celebrity who’s granted the most wishes through the charity, appeared on NBC’s “Today” show Wednesday to mark the milestone moment.

The 38-year-old Cena is following a WWE tradition of granting wishes. At the event, WWE announced a multi-year, million dollar commitment to Make-A-Wish – a symbol of WWE’s on-going support for wish granting.

WWE has reportedly granted 6,000 wishes in tandem with the foundation since the early 1980s. “That’s what resonates so much with these kids”. Sometimes, when the worst happens and a child passes away, Cena will receive letters from the bereaved yet grateful parents, thanking him for being a bright spark in their children’s short lives. After all, they’re fighters in their own right.

“Those are always hard to read”, Cena said.
