Elusive UK street artist Banksy opens darkly amusing ‘Dismaland’ theme park in

Initially it was thought that problems were occurring due to the high demand for tickets, yet many people have begun to suspect that the whole thing is a joke and hoax, just like the grafitti artist’s previous film Exit Through the Gift Shop was.

The secretive Banksy, famed for his ironic murals in unexpected places, said the show was something different as his street art had become “just as reassuringly white, middle class and lacking in women as any other art movement”. It poses a sense of mockery relating to our obsession and idealization of pop culture and celebrities. In todays mainstream society we idealize celebrities and big names that are perhaps unrealistically fantasized creatures of our imaginations.

“If you’re the kind of person who feels jaded by the over-corporate blandness that passes for family light entertainment, then this is the bespoke leisure opportunity that will connect with your core brand dynamic,” Banksy told the Guardian.

This is, of course, the Banksy who has built a reputation for leaving often political, frequently comical graffiti everywhere from London to Gaza; the street artist known for exploring war, political corruption, hope and revolution with stencils and spray paint; the anonymous figure whose identity remains unconfirmed.

He’s transformed a closed-down seaside outdoor swimming pool at Weston-super-Mare in Somerset into dark theme park.

Before its unveiling on Thursday, numerous local residents were unaware of Banksy’s plans for the area. Numerous artists exhibited share a common, postmodern distaste towards the establishment.

Although it is obvious that Disney is the main focus of this unique exhibition, they are not the only target put in the spotlight.

But it’s not all doom and gloom – there’s still good news for ticketless Banksy fans who are looking to recreate the original experience elsewhere.

Banksy said that Dismaland is a theme park with a larger theme that “theme parks should have bigger themes”.

It’s not the happiest place on earth, in fact it’s downright dreary and depressing but what would you expect from a theme park called “Dismaland?” All of is obviously very much on goal.

Like a macabre inversion of Disneyland, you can wander past a fire-ravaged fairytale castle, stare at a Cinderella pumpkin carriage crash and share a trip on the dodgems with the Grim Reaper. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the site.
