Two police officers investigating an attempted carjacking in upstate New York were wounded by a suspect before returning fire, hitting the person, authorities said.

Comitale was shot in both of his lower legs; Klein was shot in the shoulder.

“It’s very stressful, and it tugs at your heart”, Troy Police Captain Dan DeWolf said.

The suspect, who is not being identified pending notification of next of kin, sustained gun shot wounds and continued to resist as officers were handcuffing him, police said.

The police spokesman did not know how many shots were fired nor how close the officers were to the man when he fired at them.

Police said it happened in the area of 115th and 5th just before 11 p.m. He later died of his injuries. The officers were taken to Albany Medical Center.

Comitale is a seven-year member of the Troy Police Department.

DeWolf says the officers are in stable condition and are “doing OK”.
