Djokovic storms past Wawrinka into Cincinnati semis

World number one Novak Djokovic brushed aside Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka in straight sets to advance to the semi-finals of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Masters Friday. Dolgopolov drilled an ace out wide to take the first set more than doubling Djokovic in winners (12 to 5). He is hoping to become the first man to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 championships in his career.

Even after Murray broke back, Dimitrov had the match on his racket, and played some hyper-aggressive points to earn match-point-only to strike a Murray second-serve long-and he would not get another chance.

With the no. 2 seed in the US Open championship on the line, Roger Federer and Andy Murray will treat Saturday’s semifinal affair at the Cincinnati Masters as a make-or-break duel, paving the way for potentially another classic battle between two top-notch netters.

Djokovic has been almost unbeatable this season, and he defeated Federer in the Wimbledon final, but Fed is arguably playing better tennis right now.

The opening set was on serve until the ninth game, when Djokovic came through with a break for a 5-4 lead.

While Wawrinka, ranked No4 in the world, has had to deal with off-court drama and a dip in form since beating Djokovic to win the French Open, Dolgopolov, who is No66, came to the semi-final with nothing to lose and much to gain.

Djokovic and Wawrinka will meet for the 22nd time on Friday, but it will be their first clash since the Swiss triumphed at Roland Garros in June. “It’s going to tough but fun…I’m feeling really good at net, the best I’ve felt in my career”.

“I’m exhausted , my body hurts”.

Transforming a duel into demolition, Djokovic closed in 63 minutes signing the court-side camera lens “I love Pink!”

Djokovic didn’t like the way he played Saturday’s 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 semifinal against qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov, so he’s glad he found a way back to the final. Murray is looking for his third Cincinnati Open title, having previously won the title in 2008 and 2011.

Dolgopolov lost just one point on his first serves and won 80 percent of his overall service points. “Not easy to serve or easy to control the ball, it flies through the air very quickly”. “We go way back to the European Championships, under-16 and under-18 where I lost both times against him”, Federer said. Indo-Swiss women’s doubles top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis will also play their quarters against wild card American pair of Christina Mchale and CoCo Vandeweghe.
