“This helps families to understand what has happened to their loved ones, which is a high priority for us”.

“Clearly we must learn the lessons when we know what those lessons are”.

“Emergency services have declared a major incident and a number of helicopters have been deployed to the scene to evacuate casualties to hospital”, said Sussex Police.

Saturday’s is the second deadly accident at the Shoreham Air Show in the last decade.

The jet crashed at around 1.20pm on Saturday, shortly after it began its display in front of thousands of show visitors.

“Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives and we just hope that there will not be any more bodies found as the police do their grizzly duties going through the remains”.

“Within seconds we were thinking, ‘gosh, that plane is going rather low”.

The show was due to recommence on Sunday but has now been cancelled as a mark of respect, organisers said.

Brighton and Hove City Council said the A27 was badly damaged and will remain closed in both directions until at least midnight on Monday.

The pilot, Andy Hill, was a former RAF pilot and British Airways captain and was described as the “best of the best” by another pilot who flew at the airshow before the crash.
