Having missed the cut at three consecutive majors – an unthinkable low for the greatest golfer of the past two decades – the 39-year-old was just two shots off the lead going into the final round of the Wyndham Championship.

“What is it they say – your phone is blowing up?” he said, “Mine is in a meltdown”.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, who started the day in the second-to-last grouping, fell back to 11th place after shooting 70, meaning that he won’t be participating in the FedEx Cup playoff. He also becomes the third-oldest victor of a PGA Tour event. “This tournament has been good to guys in my age group“.

“This is incredible”, Love said on CBS.

Woods showed up at the Wyndham Championship to give this season one final chance, and a “W” on Sunday would certainly stand as an unqualified success, but his play this week will be measured in much more subtle terms.

Andrade closed with a one-over 73 to finish at nine-under 207 at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge in Washington.

Webb Simpson and Bill Haas are each keeping themselves in contention and are two strokes off the pace at 13-under. It was his first 54-hole lead since the 2005 84 Lumber Classic, which he converted for his lone PGA TOUR title in a now 246 career starts. Andrade won four times on the PGA Tour.

Bernhard Langer and Jeff Freeman are tied for second.

While the birdies aren’t rolling in with the same frequency for Tiger or anyone else on Saturday at the Wyndham Championship, the main attraction is still in a share of the lead.

Erik Compton, a two-time heart transplant recipient who shared the first-round lead, withdrew before his third round with an injured left ankle.

He finished his round with back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, closing by sinking a 50-foot putt.
