Ms Derrick would not comment on speculation that the dead included two cyclists, but said there were “a number of people and bikes at the scene and the officers are working through that at the moment”.

On Saturday, a Hawker Hunter military jet plummeted into a busy highway in southeastern England killing at least 7 people and injuring 14 others.

The pilot was flown to the Royal Sussex Hospital, where he is in a critical condition and fighting for his life, Superintendent Jane Derrick, from Sussex Police, said.

The Air Accident Investigation Bureau is encouraging people who attended the airshow not to post graphic photos and videos of the fiery crash online, but rather to get in contact with investigators so they can determine whether the footage is useful.

Two footballers and a personal trainer have so far been identified as victims of the crash with more bodies expected to be identified.

In a statement the 23-year-old’s grieving parents Sue and Phil; his brothers David and Paul; and their partners Emma and Charlie said: “The family are in total shock at losing our dearest son Matthew so tragically at 23 years old”.

Among those killed when the plane struck their cars were two amateur footballers travelling to a match, while a vintage Daimler was also hit on its way to pick up a bride on her wedding day.

St Mary’s Church in Shoreham held a minute’s silence before the 10am service to remember those who lost their lives and candles were lit in the St George’s Chapel after the service.

Formal identification could not yet be given, however.

‘We send our heartfelt condolences to Jacob’s family and friends at this tragic time’.

The large crash site remains a hazardous area with fuel still on the plane. All of those who died are thought to have been on the road.

A crane will be brought to the scene of the incident to remove the aircraft tomorrow (Monday August 24).

Mr Barry said the status of the jet’s ejector seats was yet to be determined but confirmed the pilot was pulled from the burning jet.

The road was also badly damaged in need of fix , he said. Police say 11 people are “highly likely” to have been killed in the crash.

Sussex Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch are investigating. It is not known if any members of a wedding party were among the victims.
